The Light Shines in a Prison, Part 1 of 2 (Light Shining in Darkness)

September 16, 2013

Sometimes we think the Gospel is a matter of persuading people to consider Christ. But it’s much more than that.

The Bible calls the Gospel “the power of God.” That word “power” in Greek is the word that gives us “dynamite” in English. That power began to be felt in the early church, and in today’s message we’ll begin tracing the impact the Gospel made in the first century.

Would you know an addict if you saw one? Not an addict to drugs or alcohol, but an addict to media technology. In this message, Pastor Lutzer gives us four signs to look for in an addict, and ways we can deal with those in our lives who are addicted to media technology.

Whatever your child’s addiction to technology is, you need to do whatever is necessary to get rid of that addiction. Enlist other believers to help, lay down the rules, and remember, we have a redeeming God to help us. Anything that drags us away from God needs to be dealt with.

Thieves may already be in your home stealing your child’s soul. They’re in television, violent video games, movies, music, and even on their cell phones. Parents need to be able to discern whether or not what their children are playing, watching, or listening to is damaging to their relationship with God.

When we’ve defiled our souls—no matter what kind of sins we’ve committed, and no matter the depth of that sin—God’s grace is available to us. Never undersell the grace of God.

Because the human soul is incapable of properly assessing its true condition, and because of the constant bombardment of media in our lives, our souls become defiled and we’re drawn away from God. In today’s message we’ll learn God’s provision of a way out.

We’re in training for another world but distracted by technology. Pastor Lutzer shares his advice on resisting temptations of the world. He starts by telling us to submit all of our technology to God, then four practical ways in which to do just that.

John made it clear: if you love the world, the love of the Father isn’t in you. But we’re all desire-driven, so how do we resist the temptations that we see every single day on our computers, televisions, in movie theaters, and on our cell phones?

In chapter four of the book of James, we’re given ten commands to keep us from the sins that ensnare us. The commands can be boiled down to three over-arching directives to follow each morning before you get out of bed: submit completely to God, resist the devil continually, and confess your sins thoroughly.

The problem isn’t “out there,” it’s in our own homes—the homes of Christians. The heart was designed for God, but we open its doors to the enemy. We invite our desires to deceive us, and when we act on them, we sin…and sin leads to death.
