Tell an Olympic runner that "it doesn't matter which track you race on, all are equally good," and he'll think you came from Mars. He knows a gold medal is only given to the winner at the track that counts. It's the same with God. There is only one way to reach Him, and that is through His son, the Lord Jesus Christ. If this sounds too exclusive for you, stay with us.

Jesus knew His disciples would be tested in ways they couldn't imagine after He faced the cross and ascended to the Father. That's why he spent His last night with them explaining what would happen and what they were to do. Today, we'll listen in us as some fearful disciples gain understanding from their Master. If you feel, like they did, that your future's out of control, stay with us.

When circumstances change in ways we can't control, we often feel helpless or even frightened, not knowing where to turn. The disciples felt that way when Jesus told them He was leaving to face the cross. How he encouraged them is how He will encourage us; it all has to do with finding out what's on "the last page."

When we speak a word of witness for Christ, we never know how people will react. But we can know that some are ready to believe. That's because the Holy Spirit works in the hearts of those the Father is drawing to Himself. Witnessing for Christ need not be a burden...in the power of the Spirit, it can be and should be a real adventure.

If the thought of witnessing for Christ frightens you, stay tuned. You're about to hear why you need never fear witnessing again. Just as a runner needs power to win a race, we need power to be effective witnesses for Christ. Today, from the words of Jesus Himself, we'll learn how to witness with absolute confidence as we learn about the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Here's one thing we must never forget: the world we live in is diametrically opposed to what Jesus Christ stands for. We can't expect to always run a smooth race of life when confronted by persecution. There will be bumps in the road. Today: final thoughts from Christ's final night on how to handle hatred and misunderstanding when it comes your way.

True followers of Christ are not guaranteed an easy road. The world we live in is no friend for a friend of God. We run life's race through a thicket of naysayers and outright enemies. In fact, Jesus told us that we would be hated by the world. Today: how we should respond when we're attacked for just believing in Jesus.

It's really great to talk with an intimate friend. You can feel safe, knowing that what's said stays between the two of you. We who run life's race need friends like that, friends who love us no matter what. Today: stay with us for thoughts from the Upper Room on being such a friend, and, on finding such a friend in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Someone once said that you can count the true friends you'll make throughout life on the fingers of just one hand. Perhaps you've made many friends along life's road, perhaps few or none. Jesus told us how true love is manifested: that a man lay down his life for his friends. Is this the kind of love manifested in your life, and in mine? If not, stay with us.

God does not save people to give them a fire-escape from hell. He saves them to bear fruit to glorify His name. For a believer, running life's race means bearing fruit by abiding in Jesus, the Vine. The resulting fruit is sweet to the Father, who tends His garden carefully to maximize the harvest. So, how much fruit are you bearing? How much am I bearing?
March 2, 2009
Everyone knows a branch of grapes receives its sustenance from the vine it's connected to. No vine: no food. Jesus wants us to know where the real power has to come from as we run the race of life. His disciples were people of the land, and they could easily understand a word picture of fruit. Today, let's all learn a lesson on fruit bearing from a vine and its branches.
