The Gift We Can't Live Without #1 of 2

March 10, 2011
We humans can live for weeks without food; perhaps days without water. But without air, we would die in a few minutes. In the race of the Christian life, there is one gift of God that believers cannot live without. We dare not die without it, either, since this gift opens the doors of heaven, making us acceptable in God’s sight. Want to know what this gift is?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. As believers mature in the faith, they realize it’s time to get out of the stands and into the race. They have to run to win. Their strength comes from God, given to them because of His abundant grace; His unmerited favor towards them through Christ. And the grace that none of us deserves is our focus on today’s broadcast.

Some call it “God’s riches at Christ’s expense.” Those who run the race of the Christian life know the anagram as “grace.” Once they understand what the Bible teaches about salvation, they know that grace is unmerited favor and they thank God every day of their lives for the grace that made it possible for them to become citizens of heaven.

When running the race of the Christian life, it’s easy to forget those who have never gotten on the track. Millions of people don’t know where it is. They try to gain heaven through their own efforts. They think that if their good deeds outweigh their bad, they’ll make it through heaven’s gates. Others hope that keeping the sacraments will insure their eternal future. So, what’s the truth?

Picture a marathon runner jogging all alone, way in front of the pack. He doesn’t know that he left the correct route long ago. He’s sincere, but sincerely wrong. Run as he might, his efforts will never win him the race. Sincerity is great, but it’s not enough, especially when it comes to this all-important matter: the salvation of our souls.

Is God on America’s side? We all thought so when the twin towers were destroyed. Off we went to fight the war on terror. Years later, the war is ongoing. The economy is teetering on the brink. Tough times lie ahead for America, and many feel we’re experiencing God’s righteous judgment. Erwin Lutzer points the way forward for those who want to see America, again, be blessed by God.

The separation of Church and State is a premise not found in the Constitution or in the Declaration of Independence. It’s referred to in the writings of Thomas Jefferson and has been given a level of authority beyond that of the Bible itself. It is now a high wall, designed to keep God in a box while we as a nation do whatever we please. What is the inevitable outcome?

“Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man sows, that will he reap.” That goes for nations as well. The United States has known blessing from the hand of God that few nations in history have been given. But that blessing may be in short supply in the days ahead, as increasingly, we have turned our backs on the God who gives blessings.

As jobs dry up and wars drag on, the outlook keeps darkening. Enormous challenges face our political leaders: an economy in collapse, debt too great to ever repay, and, an increasing sense that the future may well be worse than the past. At this crucial hour, perhaps one question rises above all others: “Is God on America’s Side?”

First place, the thought of winning a race drives athletes to excel, to give their all to cross the goal line first. Believers are to give God first place in their lives, running life’s race for no other reason than to express their love for Him. In fact, we’re commanded to love God supremely: everything else is to take second place.

At the racetrack, a runner is driven by the thought of victory. The race is worth all the effort when the prize waits at the end. Believers are to run life’s race for Christ, who taught us to love God with all our being as the first and greatest commandment. Now that’s a tall order, one we’ll explore today on our broadcast. How much do you love God? How much do I?
