The Gift of Spiritual Fruit, Part 1 of 2 (When the Spirit Has His Way)

June 27, 2013

Christians have an inner conflict. The desires of the flesh rage against the desires of the Holy Spirit. As we learn to walk in the Spirit, following the prompts given to us by God, we’ll no longer give in to the desires of the flesh. Today, Pastor Lutzer gives us images to cling to in order to help us keep on the right path.

This gift of speaking in tongues was prevalent at the birth of the church, and today its resurgence causes some to wonder if what we see now is the same thing that happened long ago. In today’s message we’ll take a careful look into the Bible for clarity on what tongues are, and what they’re not.

All of us have natural abilities. Some have more; some have less. But every believer in Jesus has a spiritual gift. Some teach; some proclaim from a pulpit. Others serve in quiet ways that few will notice. In today’s message, learn how to find out what your gift is and how to put it to use for God’s glory.

The process of becoming Christ-like involves a growing sensitivity to the Holy Spirit who wants to create in us the character of Jesus. Sins that seemed small suddenly seem big, and our desire to please God means saying “no” to many things that didn’t bother us before.

The Holy Spirit is very sensitive, that’s why He is usually depicted as a gentle dove. He will not force Himself upon us so we must become attuned to Him so that we don’t grieve Him. As we mature in our faith, we become ever more sensitive to the Spirit’s presence, and our behavior will, slowly but surely, begin to change.

Some people go through life never sure if they’re saved. The Bible makes it clear that you can have this certainty. Believers in Christ are sealed by the Holy Spirit, and that seal is a down-payment on the eternal life to come. As God’s property, we’re on the road toward a future kingdom, and the Holy Spirit makes this real to all who are born again.

As believers in Christ, we know we’re in God’s hands and that we’ll make it to the very end. God has sealed us with the Holy Spirit, and He’s the only one who can break that seal.

God sees every motivation and watches every act. In today’s message, Pastor Lutzer tells us why moral purity is a must and what we can do to remain pure and be cleansed if we’ve already given in to temptations.

As our culture becomes more saturated with “guiltless” immorality, it becomes harder to live a pure life. The Apostle Paul faced similar circumstances with the Corinthians who justified their ways, much as today’s society does. But Paul told them in no uncertain terms: you’re not free to live however you want. Your body is for the Lord, not for immorality.

When we don’t acknowledge God—when we don’t worship God—when we don’t love the Lord with all of our hearts, minds and souls—we are living in sin. And the Holy Spirit has come to convict us of this sin, and of the danger facing us if we continue down that path. He has come to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

The Holy Spirit lives in every believer. And because of that, there’s an immediate bond between all believers in Christ. So when you meet a fellow believer—someone you’ve never met before—there’s an intangible sense of community. And that sense of community is more evidence of the reality of the Holy Spirit.
