Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

The Gift of Security, Part 2 of 2 (When the Spirit Has His Way)

June 20, 2013

Some people go through life never sure if they’re saved. The Bible makes it clear that you can have this certainty. Believers in Christ are sealed by the Holy Spirit, and that seal is a down-payment on the eternal life to come. As God’s property, we’re on the road toward a future kingdom, and the Holy Spirit makes this real to all who are born again.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. As believers in Christ, we know we’re in God’s hands and that we’ll make it to the very end. God has sealed us with the Holy Spirit, and He’s the only one who can break that seal.

God sees every motivation and watches every act. In today’s message, Pastor Lutzer tells us why moral purity is a must and what we can do to remain pure and be cleansed if we’ve already given in to temptations.

As our culture becomes more saturated with “guiltless” immorality, it becomes harder to live a pure life. The Apostle Paul faced similar circumstances with the Corinthians who justified their ways, much as today’s society does. But Paul told them in no uncertain terms: you’re not free to live however you want. Your body is for the Lord, not for immorality.

When we don’t acknowledge God—when we don’t worship God—when we don’t love the Lord with all of our hearts, minds and souls—we are living in sin. And the Holy Spirit has come to convict us of this sin, and of the danger facing us if we continue down that path. He has come to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment.

The Holy Spirit lives in every believer. And because of that, there’s an immediate bond between all believers in Christ. So when you meet a fellow believer—someone you’ve never met before—there’s an intangible sense of community. And that sense of community is more evidence of the reality of the Holy Spirit.

By looking at the early church, Pastor Lutzer shows us how, through the Holy Spirit, the Christians lived and spread the good news of the Gospel. Through the unity they all shared in the Spirit, there was a connectedness that gave them power. Their holy living caused the world to feel uncomfortable, and we would do well to follow their example.

Through Jesus, the Living Water cleanses us, regenerates us, gives us a new nature, and empowers us. We can be at peace and have the assurance that we belong to God forever.

What water is to the body, the Holy Spirit is to our soul. Things of this world can’t fill the emptiness we feel. We are actually seeking something beyond this world. And Jesus said that if anyone is thirsty, they should come to Him.

The Holy Spirit is not only with us, He is in us. When we sin, He is grieved.  When we think that no one cares, He comforts us. When we can’t pray because our circumstances are so dark, He prays on our behalf.

The Bible uses word-pictures to help us understand spiritual truth. This is especially true with regard to the Holy Spirit. We learn about the Holy Spirit by seeing His work in terms of things such as oil, water, and wind.  Each picture increases our understanding, and today, we’ll learn about another word-picture that speaks of the power and purity of the Spirit.
