The Future Is Here, Part 2 of 2

January 3, 2013

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It used to be easy to tell a Christian from a non-Christian. But in today’s world where many attend the same movies, listen to the same music, and even act like those “of the world,” it’s not so easy. This message is the first in the series, “Who Are You to Judge?” — and it’s a wake up call for all Christians.

In the book of Jeremiah, God shows the prophet that Israel is under His control by using the analogy of a potter and clay. In today’s message, Pastor Lutzer helps us understand how we, like the clay, are being molded into something beautiful by the hands of God.

Every Christian faces trials, often heavy trials, and we may see no reason for the deep valleys through which we go: sudden bereavement, a job loss, serious illness. All of these may obscure the fact that God has an ultimate purpose. As clay on a potter’s wheel, we are all being molded through our circumstances to become something beautiful.

Jesus taught us to not worry. Yet many of us worry all the time. This causes stress and erodes our spiritual power. We scan internet blogs looking for the latest threats to our freedom, and yet Jesus told us to seek first His kingdom, and let Him handle our daily needs. If we truly do this, our anxieties will be gone. Want a new outlook, or re-directed focus?

All around us, turmoil threatens. The stock market plummets. Wars drag on, the economy falters, job prospects dim. Terrorism breeds fear and uncertainty, yet even with Middle East nuclear threats, there is a way to live above the fray, and to settle our anxious hearts. Today, we hope to bring you some peace in the midst of your storm.

It is time to pick up the wrappings and watch as the kids play with their new toys. The race of Christmas is over. If you’re about to run to the store to return some gifts, remember this: the holiday has its roots in a far different culture, at a very different time and place. Listen today as Dr. Lutzer brings us down to Earth with another view of Christmas.

At last, the shopping race is over. No more running around for last minute gifts. Now, we can collect our thoughts. We can spend time with family, and reflect on why we celebrate Christmas in the first place. On this special day, take a few minutes and consider Christmas from a different viewpoint — from a place far away and a time long, long ago.

When Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free,” He made possible the ultimate kind of freedom — all real freedom has its roots in truth — and Christ said He was the truth. For all who are trapped in addictions and oppression, Christ’s gift of liberty is yours to take. It’s Christmas, and for the best Christmas present you’ll ever get, listen to this message.

In America, we pride ourselves on being free — free to eat too much, pray too little, and spend ourselves into debt. In fact, what we call freedom is really a form of bondage: a slavery to our desires with little regard for eternal consequences. Today you’ll hear about a gift you can open, a gift that unlocks the prison door, and can really set you free.

The skies over Bethlehem had never before radiated this much glory. Massed angels brought the light of the noonday sun. As shepherds cowered in fear, the angels announced the Light of the world. Today, we will see why Christ is God’s great Christmas gift of light, and what that light uncovers when it shines in our dark hearts.
