Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Some people think you can get rid of anger by hitting something inanimate, and “letting off steam.” Trouble is, it doesn’t work. Modern pop psychology is no match for the Bible in pinpointing the source of rage, or in helping us control the anger we all experience at one time or another. Today: we’ll learn more about the causes of anger and how to handle it properly.

We’ve all seen them: people out of control with anger. They drive dangerously. They start fights. But where does this rage come from? Winning in life’s race means getting anger under control: as in not reacting impulsively when someone cuts you off in traffic. Today we’ll probe the source of a destructive rage.

We’ve all experienced the painful emotion of shame: either because we’ve done wrong, or because wrongs have been done to us. Sadly, some homes are even based on shame. Today, we’ll learn what this means, explore shame’s consequences, and then look to the Bible to find God’s cure for shame. If you need help right now with your shame, please stay with us.

It’s a powerful and painful emotion. We’ve all felt it, but some have felt it so deeply that it threatens to destroy them. Shame. This emotion can be a paralyzing curse, driving us to do things we would not otherwise do. Today, we’re going to explore its origins, then turn to the Bible to discover God’s answer to the curse of shame.

It’s sad, but true: in our modern, “enlightened” culture, we no longer repent of our sins. Instead, we’ve learned to manage them. We’re so deceived, we think we’re okay as long as we keep our sins in balance, like a circus juggler. We do this, knowing full well that God is not fooled. Yet, we do it anyway. Today: the bitter fruits of deception.

From presidents to paupers, a common theme of the human race is self-deception. We lie, and what’s more, we enjoy it. We’re far from being the inherently good people our culture says we are. In fact, apart from certain restraints, we’re capable of unspeakable evil. Today: another chapter in our journey of self-discovery, a journey in which we’re finding out why we do what we do.

A carnival house of mirrors is a lot of fun. First you’re fat, then thin, then both. But at the exit, the real you comes out. Many people are deluded, seeing themselves as they want to, not as they are. One cause of this can be refusing to listen to the honest critiques of others. Today: more lessons from James on self-perception and on what it means to hear correctly.

When Timothy McVeigh went to his execution, America was left wondering how a decorated war veteran could’ve done something so evil. Many ask why seemingly good people turn bad. How can someone turn violent after a lifetime of apparent normalcy? The answer lies in understanding our fundamental human nature. It’s not easy, but is possible, if you’re willing to face the truth.

To win a major race, runners lose extra weight. They cast off everything that might slow them down on their way to victory. Believers are commanded to love God supremely and cast off every weight and sin that besets them. Then they can run life’s race at top speed, knowing that the goal line will bring them face to face with the God they love.  How’s your race going today?

At the racetrack, a runner is driven by the thought of victory. The race is worth all the effort with the prize waiting at the end. Believers are to run life’s race for Christ, Who taught us that the first and greatest commandment is to love God with all our hearts, souls, and minds. Now that’s a tall order, one we’ll explore today. Do you and I love God this way?
