The Empire Strikes Out #2 of 2

July 6, 2010
When we think of God judging a nation, we tend to think of pestilence, famine, and invading armies. But consider this; judgment might come from within, as moral rot destroys our culture. Abortion kills our young, marriage is redefined, national wealth is squandered, all with a smiling Congress giving its blessing. Today, we will hear why judgment on America may already be in full force.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. America just celebrated another birthday. History tells us that few nations get very far past 200 years old without breaking down. Some are conquered from the outside, others rot from the inside. The world’s superpower is facing a shaky future, as societal changes point to a loss of national character. Today, we will compare the America of 2010 to Israel during the time of the Judges.

When our bad choices result in harm to others, it may be only later that we realize what we have done.  Then, what do we do? The Apostle Paul had persecuted the new church with zeal.  He watched with glee as Stephen was stoned to death, then came his conversion on the road to Damascus.  How he came to grips with his actions is our focus for today’s broadcast.

Sometimes our bad choices only affect us personally.  But more often, they impact the lives of those around us. Bad decisions bring with them bad consequences, often in the lives of those close to us.  How do we unravel the messes we make when we act without God’s guidance?  Or, messes we made before coming to Christ?  Today we look at a few lessons from the Apostle Paul on handling messes like these.

The Bible warns us to guard our hearts, lest we turn away from the counsel of God. It’s very easy to rely on our own instincts. King Asa was faithful to God, except at the end of his life. Sadly, his finish line was marred by the consequences of a bad choice. Today we look at a few lessons we can learn from Asa’s failure.

“….what a tangled web we weave when first we purpose to deceive….”   Many people fear their secrets will one day be revealed. The webs we weave through deception entangle us with unintended consequences. Today we look at story from the Bible of a faithful king who failed near his finish line, leaving Israel in a state of war.

When we come to a fork in the road, we have two choices.   If we choose the wrong way, we have to face the consequences. That’s what happened to Jonah, told by God to preach to people he did not like. His attempt to flee brought him to the face of God. The God whose will would ultimately be done. Today we learn lessons we can apply when coming to our forks in the road.

Obligations are something we all have. Some are like millstones around our necks, and we’d do anything to be free of the pressure. Today we hear a story of an obligation God gave to, His prophet, Jonah, and his amazing journey to avoid that obligation. Jonah was told to go preach to the people of Ninevah, and everything in him said “no way.”

He made an impulsive choice regarding Bathsheba, and a pregnancy resulted. This set in motion the inevitable cover-up, in which her husband was killed to hide the sin. For David, and for us, cover-ups don’t work. The outcome involved severe temporal judgment.

A mistake in the moral area has long term consequences. King David made a big mistake with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. A story he’d wished could stay private got public real fast, and a king of Israel was in serious trouble.

“…shame on you, if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice, should've known better but I didn't, and I can't go back….” That’s the songwriter’s take on broken vows. What to do when you’ve been taken in, is the problem Joshua faced with the Gibeonites. His response is an example of how we should react when we find out we have been had by making a reckless promise.
