The Discipline of Servanthood #1 of 2

August 12, 2010
Many American Christians want what everybody else wants...success and security. Few want to take a towel to wash someone’s feet. Being a servant goes against our grain. But, in God’s eyes, it’s the servants who win in the race of life. Everybody likes servants as long as they don’t have to be servants. Ready for a paradigm shift? Stay with us today as we explore “The Discipline of Servanthood.”

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. There are times to feast, holiday times, times of celebration. But in the plan of God, there are also times to fast. Some of the tough laps in life’s race require the spiritual discipline of fasting. We see this in Jesus’ own 40-day example in the wilderness. Fasting means avoiding food altogether. That’s what Jesus needed. Could it be what you need as well?

Many of us don’t think twice about grabbing a Big Mac, large fries and a Coke at lunchtime. After all, when hungry, eat! But in God’s rules for the race of life, there are times to bypass the Golden Arches, and even bypass food altogether. Have you ever fasted for several days to deepen your prayer life? Before you say “you’ve got to be kidding,” listen with us.

For some in America, it’s perfectly acceptable to pursue money. Sports and media figures exemplify the accumulation of material wealth. But money can weigh us down in the race of life. Worse, it can turn our hearts away from God and toward pursuing even more money and the things it buys. God has some words to say to the rich, words you’ll hear on today’s Running to Win.

You can tell where a Christian’s values lie by examining his or her giving. One hallmark of a true believer is generosity. It’s a touchy subject, but we’re not afraid to hit the nail on the head as we focus on another of the spiritual disciplines that strengthen us in the race of life. Today we look at what God wants you to do with the resources He has provided.

At times during the race of life, the winds of change swirl, almost blowing us off the track. We need stability. Meditation in the word of God provides that still point in a turning world. Teaching from the book of Joshua teaches us how meditation in the word of God can give us inner resources to face whatever comes our way. How still is your heart as you run your race?

Mention “meditation” to some people and they envision an Eastern mystic sitting in a lotus position. But real meditation is far different. Running the race of life requires inner strength, strength forged through spiritual disciplines. Today we will explore the second of Dr. Erwin Lutzer’s five “Disciplines That Grow Godliness,” and hear what God had to say to Joshua about meditation.

A woman sat near an ancient well, face to face with Jesus. Their discussion turned from physical water to spiritual water and her journey in the race of life was changed forever. She learned the meaning of true worship and why it is vital to worship the God who desires our adoration. The discipline of worship is our focus on today’s broadcast.

The winning athlete is invariably the one who understands discipline: taking the right steps to insure victory, just as it takes discipline to win at the track, you can be sure it takes discipline to win in the race of life. Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer begins a series exploring five “Disciplines That Grow Godliness.” Are you ready to get into the real game?
