The Discipline of Generosity #1 of 2

August 6, 2010

It’s a touchy subject, but we’re not afraid to hit the nail on the head as we focus on another of the spiritual disciplines that strengthen us in the race of life. Today we look at what God wants you to do with the resources He has provided.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. At times during the race of life, the winds of change swirl, almost blowing us off the track. We need stability. Meditation in the word of God provides that still point in a turning world. Teaching from the book of Joshua teaches us how meditation in the word of God can give us inner resources to face whatever comes our way. How still is your heart as you run your race?

Mention “meditation” to some people and they envision an Eastern mystic sitting in a lotus position. But real meditation is far different. Running the race of life requires inner strength, strength forged through spiritual disciplines. Today we will explore the second of Dr. Erwin Lutzer’s five “Disciplines That Grow Godliness,” and hear what God had to say to Joshua about meditation.

A woman sat near an ancient well, face to face with Jesus. Their discussion turned from physical water to spiritual water and her journey in the race of life was changed forever. She learned the meaning of true worship and why it is vital to worship the God who desires our adoration. The discipline of worship is our focus on today’s broadcast.

To many people, the Bible is something you put your hand on to be sworn into office. Beyond that, it’s just Jewish myths and moral teaching, but the sixty-six books that make up our Bible contain powerful, life-changing truth, thanks to the God who made sure we are reading what He intended. How the books of the bible became the word of God is the focus for today’s message.

If the Bible was written by 40 authors over a period of 1600 years, the book we hold today had to have a serious editor. Where did the Bible come from? Who picked what writings got in, and which were rejected? Today we see the bottom line on how God superintended the Bible’s contents by setting standards for what writings became scripture.

Despite the evidence, most scientists reject a Divine Hand in creation because that Hand would hold them morally accountable. As one scientist said, “We can’t let God get a foot in the door.” Well, His foot is not only in the door, He made the door. Today we will hear why creation shouts the truth of the Bible.

Thanks to the space program, astronomers know a great deal about what is “out there.” But they can’t tell us how it all “got there.” The tough thing for astronomers is the question of Ultimate Cause….what was there before the Big Bang. Only by revelation can we touch the infinite and learn the answer. The Bible sheds some brilliant light on how all we see around us came to be.
