The Death of God, Part 2 of 2 (The Mysteries of God)

May 11, 2016

If you’re a dad, and your son is gravely ill in the hospital, you’d do anything to trade places and bear your son’s pain. The same is true for God the Father. When His Son Jesus agonized on the cross, God felt the pain His Son was enduring, knowing He was paying the price for sin.

The death of Jesus on a Roman cross is the turning point of history. That act of obedience to the Father secured the salvation of all who believe on His Son. Jesus said, “There is no greater love than a man lay down His life for His friends.”

The relationship between the Father and the Son is crucial to understanding Christianity. Jesus died as a sacrifice to avert the Father’s wrath against guilty sinners like us. That is an expression of love that can never be fully understood.

In many ways, God is incomprehensible. He is so vast that our small minds cannot fathom His immensity. Theologians have wrestled with the nature of God for centuries, trying to defend the relationship of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

To ask why God does what He does is to go where angels fear to tread. Paul wrote, “How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out.” God’s choices are not negotiable. We must accept His sovereignty and obey His commands.

Long before any of us were born, the life-giving God set His creation in motion. These decisions were grounded in his eternal decisions. Theologians call these decisions “decrees,” nonnegotiable orders God laid down—which govern creation, redemption, and history.

The complexity of the human body is awe-inspiring. We take for granted that we each have some 34 trillion cells, each one packed with volumes of information. Even to such incredible precision, we can say with certainty that God knows us.

Hide-and-seek is a classic and beloved favorite among children, but this game cannot be played with God. By virtue of His perfect knowledge and His all-present nature, He knows our location and even our thoughts. He has an exhaustive knowledge of all things, both actual and potential.

In Psalm 90, Moses wrote, “From everlasting to everlasting you are God.” He compares God’s eternality to our short spans of life, reminding us to “number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.” What can we learn as we consider God’s eternal nature?

The Bible tells us about God and His purposes. Not everything is crystal clear, though. There are mysteries we cannot understand in this life, especially as we consider the nature of God Himself. But let’s delve into the mystery and aim to comprehend God as best we can, according to His Word.

Under pressure from agenda-driven groups, what was once considered free speech is now considered a hate crime. In public schools, tax money is spent teaching our kids about various forms of sexuality. Is there a time to stand up and say “no”? The answer is “yes.”
