Buried deep in the purposes of God lies the answer to this question: why did the Father send His Son to the cross? As we run life's daily race, let's not forget that mercy is getting what you don't deserve. God was not obligated to save any of us, and yet He has. Today, we begin an awesome look at how far God went to provide redemption for a lost mankind.

Many people believe Jesus was a great teacher and a good example. But few really understand why He died on a cruel cross. These days, polling data is king. In the mainstream media, the truth seems to lie with the majority opinion. And so we're analyzing what people believe about the cross of Christ: the only means of eternal salvation. For some crucial insights, stay with us.

To many people the cross is a piece of jewelry, or what's atop a church steeple. Most people don't see it as it really is... the centerpiece of history and the core of God's redemptive agenda. In recent days on Running to Win we've been exploring God's view of the cross, but today we'll focus on man's viewpoint. As we'll soon see, the contrast is startling.

If something is important to God, it had better be important to us. And the one thing central in God's agenda is the cross. That cross was in God's mind from eternity past. Its benefits extend to eternity yet to be. It is history's great intersection: the place of God's greatest expression of love to fallen mankind. Today: more about "What God Thinks of the Cross."

The cross of Christ is the centerpiece of our faith, and the means by which forgiveness comes. It's in that cross that we glory. As we run life's race, our eyes are often drawn to secondary things such as political advantage. In the final analysis, we need to have a clear view of how important the cross really is. Today, we'll learn what God the Father thinks of His Son's cross.

You've heard it said that oil and water don't mix. They're too different...they cannot work together. It's just like the cross and the flag. We who run life's race need to learn this lesson well: those who mix the cross and any nation's flag do a disservice to both. And for believers, keeping them distinct is the only way to fulfill our prime mission as ambassadors for Christ to a needy world.

The red, white, and blue...we Americans rightly treasure our flag. But some think the flag is as important as the cross. When it comes to being citizens of both heaven and earth, believers running the race of life need to keep first things first. Stand by for some flying sparks, as Erwin Lutzer takes aim at those who equate Old Glory with the one place of true glory.

There's a great battle going on...a battle that will not cease until the end of this age. Now it's not the Left versus the Right...it's the clash of cross and culture. As runners in the race of life, believers need to understand this conflict. As citizens of heaven and earth, we have obligations to both, obligations we must keep distinct, especially at election time.

In November, Americans will face a stark choice at the polling booth. The issues are clear....and the future is at stake. Many Christians active in politics find themselves facing an increasingly hostile society. That's because the cross of Christ is inherently at odds with our culture. To help us frame the key issues, today we begin a series on Why the Cross Can Do What Politics Can't.

Military life: it requires discipline, focus, and a commitment to serve. As believers in Christ, "we're in the army now." Civilian life is over. It's time to make some adjustments, assess our gifts, find our places in God's army, wear His spiritual armor and proclaim His life-giving message. Today: we're going on a mission, and we hope you're going with us. Please stay tuned.
