The greatest act of submission to the will of God was Jesus, the perfect Son of God, allowing Himself to be put to death. To make sure we understood Calvary, God gave us Mount Moriah. There Abraham, a picture of God the Father, was asked to sacrifice Isaac, the picture of Christ the Son. To read Genesis 22 is to weep. Today: we plumb the depths of a story only God could have written.

Have you ever really been put to the test by God? A test that proves that you will obey Him...no matter what the cost? There are few places in Scripture that draw more tears from the reader than the account found in Genesis 22. Abraham is asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, the son of promise, the son through whose line the Redeemer was to come. Isaac was to die.

When they woke up one fateful morning, the citizens of Sodom had no idea that this would be their last day alive. Sodom's debauchery was relentless to the end. The brimstone was on its way as God mercifully sent two angels to rescue Lot's family before the smoke rose. How do you feel when your prayers are not answered? Imagine this: how did Abraham feel when Sodom was destroyed? God had agreed to spare the city if ten righteous were found. Abraham thought he had a sure deal. Then the smoke rose. So, was his prayer worth it? Is ours, when answers never come? Today: a probing look at the real purpose of prayer.

When the sun rises each day, one thing that's certain is uncertainty: we do not know what a day may bring forth. Abraham came out of his tent one day and saw three men standing there...men who were not ordinary men. In his keen spiritual insight, he sensed he was in the presence of the Lord. As Hebrews 13 says, some "have entertained angels without knowing it."

Genesis chapter 21 tells of the parting of the ways between the two sons of Abraham. Ishmael, father of the Arab nations, was cast out of the house along with his mother Hagar. When God changes your name, it's always the mark of a new relationship with Him, out of which comes a new destiny. For 99 years he was known as Abram. Now, he will be called Abraham, the "father of many nations." God institutes circumcision to mark the newly expanded covenant. Ishmael is a teenager...Isaac is not yet born. We stand at a crucial point in history.

"Too many cooks spoil the broth," the saying goes. And two women vying for attention can certainly wreck a household. Sarah's idea to have Abraham father a promised heir through her maid has backfired. Anger and bitterness have replaced the peace that once reigned in their home. Hagar runs away to escape the torment, only to find comfort from an unexpected place.

Sometimes, we second-guess God. Knowing what His will is, we may try to engineer circumstances to bring it to pass. That's what Abraham did when God said he would have numberless offspring. Since his wife was past childbearing, he slept with their Egyptian maid Hagar. The result: the present Arab-Israeli conflict. Today: what to do when faith doesn't seem to square with reality.
