The Claims of the Bible #2 of 2

July 14, 2010
To gather evidence, courts take testimony from witnesses. To evaluate the claims of the Bible, let’s put it on the stand. As the cross-examination begins, we find a book that claims to speak for God. In fact, it claims God spoke through its authors. Today more on the claims the Bible makes for itself, and what those claims mean for you and me.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The Bible was written by 40 authors over some 1,600 years. But a clear unity marks the diversity of its origin and this book makes some remarkable claims for itself. Today, let’s pause in the race of life long enough to put the Bible on the witness stand, and hear its own testimony about itself.

Sometimes in a business deal, the negotiations end. The terms are clear; your choice is simple: you either take it, or leave it. As a guidebook for the race of life, we must either take the Bible as it is, or reject it outright. Picking only the good parts won’t do. Listen to this message to find out why this is, and how this book can be the light to guide your pathway.

The Bible gives direction to those running life’s race, not just for this life, but for the life to come. Beginning today, we’re bringing an eight-part series that tells you why you can trust this book with your life. Get set for the journey.

It’s not in the news or in the mainstream media, but there is a battle going on that demands our full attention, and full commitment. Your teenagers are in the crosshairs as powerful forces seek their destruction through early addiction to drugs and pornography. In this battle, the culture is not your friend.

Independence Day reminds us that America won its freedom. But some in America today are still locked in chains. America’s youth are being targeted by powerful forces bent on their destruction through early addiction to pornography and substance abuse. Today: a call for a new Independence Day as parents take back control of the destiny of their children. Stay with us.

When we think of God judging a nation, we tend to think of pestilence, famine, and invading armies. But consider this; judgment might come from within, as moral rot destroys our culture. Abortion kills our young, marriage is redefined, national wealth is squandered, all with a smiling Congress giving its blessing. Today, we will hear why judgment on America may already be in full force.

America just celebrated another birthday. History tells us that few nations get very far past 200 years old without breaking down. Some are conquered from the outside, others rot from the inside. The world’s superpower is facing a shaky future, as societal changes point to a loss of national character. Today, we will compare the America of 2010 to Israel during the time of the Judges.

When our bad choices result in harm to others, it may be only later that we realize what we have done.  Then, what do we do? The Apostle Paul had persecuted the new church with zeal.  He watched with glee as Stephen was stoned to death, then came his conversion on the road to Damascus.  How he came to grips with his actions is our focus for today’s broadcast.

Sometimes our bad choices only affect us personally.  But more often, they impact the lives of those around us. Bad decisions bring with them bad consequences, often in the lives of those close to us.  How do we unravel the messes we make when we act without God’s guidance?  Or, messes we made before coming to Christ?  Today we look at a few lessons from the Apostle Paul on handling messes like these.

The Bible warns us to guard our hearts, lest we turn away from the counsel of God. It’s very easy to rely on our own instincts. King Asa was faithful to God, except at the end of his life. Sadly, his finish line was marred by the consequences of a bad choice. Today we look at a few lessons we can learn from Asa’s failure.
