The Battle for Your Mind, Part 1 of 2

January 6, 2012
There is a war on, but it is not being fought with guns. The stakes are high, and like it or not, everyone is on the front lines. It is the battle for your mind, as forces conspire to slow you down in life’s race through confusion and false teaching. Those forces are in control of much of the media we see and hear, and the enemy of our souls wants nothing less than to control what you think about.

So, friend, what is your besetting sin? Many Christians are weighed down with sins they cannot seem to stop committing. And so they run life’s race with difficulty, getting farther behind all the time. The goal line is obscured, and for some, is almost lost from sight. Some feel their sin qualifies as “unpardonable.” Stay tuned, and you will learn that you can still run your race in the freedom of forgiveness.

Sin is a weight that drags down a Christian as he or she tries to run life’s race. It is a weight we can well be rid of. But some sins take the form of addictions, and many feel they have sinned too greatly to ever find forgiveness. They feel the door to heaven has been locked shut, since they have committed the, “unpardonable sin.” Their pasts remind them of failure and defeat. But there is a way out.

“Get rid of the extra weight and the sin that besets you!” That is the Bible’s word for those who want to run life’s race, and win. Nothing beats the exhilaration of running at full speed for the first time. Too many Christians cannot because of secrets they are afraid to reveal. It is time to open the door and let in the light of God’s forgiveness. Stay with us to find out how to cast off the weights of your past, and be free.

The Bible correlates life to a racetrack. Heaven is the audience. Believers wait at the starting line, commanded to run well, but you cannot run well weighed down by the sins of your past. Everyone has a dark corner in the closet, secrets no one can know. Too many are burdened with guilt, living lives of quiet desperation. Today’s message will help you put your past behind you, and, once again, run free.

“I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. I have the keys of Death and of Hades….” The glorified Jesus spoke these words in revealing to the Apostle John what was yet to come, as we read in the book of Revelation. Man’s greatest need is not economic security. It’s a future after death. Only Jesus can provide that future. Today: a celebration of the risen Christ.

Is God’s will elusive? Does He try to make it hard to find? As the new year dawns, what lies ahead in the plan of God? The best advice: take one step at a time. As we’re learning, God’s will is a series of small events that ultimately take us where He wants us to go. Today: you’ll hear light from the scriptures to make your path and mine into the coming new year more clear.

It’s blank parchment...a new year dawns with no written history. What happens in this new year is known only to God. That’s why it makes a lot of sense to allow God to order our steps in the weeks and months ahead. In these uncertain times, it makes more sense than ever to let God call the shots in your life and mine. On today’s broadcast, Erwin Lutzer will help us do just that.

Some of us make New Year’s resolutions, which are quickly broken.  Today, you will hear a challenge for one resolution you should keep. In Gethsemane, Jesus roused his sleeping disciples, asking “Could you not pray with me one hour?” Erwin Lutzer is placing that question before us today. As a new year dawns, let’s covenant to set aside one hour a week for Jesus.

The garden of Gethsemane is a place, even today, for tears. It is here that Jesus asked His disciples to pray with him. However, instead of praying they fell asleep, prompting the Savior to ask, “Could you not watch with me one hour?" Today Erwin Lutzer asks that question anew.

The people of Jesus’ day were under the rule of the Roman Empire, eager for anyone to deliver them from Caesar’s yoke. That’s why some saw in Jesus the deliverer that had been foretold. They wanted a leader to overthrow their oppressors. But Jesus had a larger deliverance to make: a deliverance from the power of sin. Today: we’ll see Jesus from God’s vantage point. Stay with us.
