When The Son Is Crowned #2 of 2

January 14, 2011
These days, conspiracies are all the rage. Politicians speak of vast conspiracies to undermine their points of view. But the real conspiracy is that of the nations of the world in revolt against God. Psalm 2 tells us that God sits in heaven, laughing at man’s attempt to remove him from society. Today: more assurance that everything remains under God’s control.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Everywhere you look, the Christian faith is under attack. Governments cater to radical Muslims, but Christians? They’re fair game, it seems the world has gone topsy-turvy, and many ask the question, “Is God really in charge?” Today, Erwin Lutzer traces some blatant attacks on Christians, but then takes us to the Bible for the assurance that, despite all we see around us, God is still in control.

One lesson we can learn from the story of Jonah: God is as concerned with our motivations as He is with our actions. After Jonah preached, he got angry and depressed. Then God sent a sequence of events into his life to teach the wayward prophet some pointed object lessons. Today: we’ll meet a plant, a worm, and a scorching east wind.

When someone you know is having a pity party, it’s no fun. Usually, it’s not a party anybody really wants to attend. Jonah finally obeyed God, but took no joy in the revival that followed his preaching in Ninevah. His self-focus kept him from seeing the big picture. Instead, he sat down, asking God that he might die. Pity party indeed!

Some of God’s servants have to go to school: and that’s the school of hard knocks before they learn to obey God from the heart. And some never learn. Jonah went to Nineveh, but only after some tough correction from the Lord. Still, his heart was hard; he had no real concern for the people of a great pagan city. So, are we serving God for the right reasons?

Everybody has an agenda these days, especially politicians. “Looking out for number one:” hey, that’s a national pastime. God wants His servants focused on God’s agenda, and not their own. It has taken some extraordinary measures to get Jonah back on the road to Nineveh, but now he’s going, in body if not in heart. Today: Jonah’s lessons continue, as do ours.

Have circumstances ever brought you to the end of your rope? They did for Jonah, who found himself in the belly of a fish. God has amazing ways of getting us to say yes. He does not make us puppets; rather, He arranges conditions so that we will choose to do His will. Sometimes those conditions can be tough, and they stay that way until we submit to God’s authority.

When God wants to get the attention of one of His servants who is not listening, He has numerous creative options available. In the case of Jonah, God took extreme measures. The belly of a great fish is hardly the Holiday Inn, and here Jonah really began to get the message. Today: learning to respond to God’s direction before He has to take us to the woodshed.

Running away from the will of God is not a good idea. The problem is that God knows where you’re going even before you do, Jonah was determined to avoid doing a distasteful job: preaching to a pagan city that they might repent. Here we have a prophet who’d rather hit the road than tell the Ninevites that judgment could be averted. Today: God blocks Jonah’s escape route.

“That guy? He’s as stubborn as a mule.” That’s how we describe people who won’t listen to reason, no matter what we say. God has many ways of getting us to say yes, even when we’re digging in our heels. We are about to embark on a study in the life of the prophet Jonah. As we do, we’ll find that God has a multitude of creative ways to make sure we change our minds.

“I am He who lives, and was dead. And behold, I am alive forevermore. I have the keys of death and of Hades.” The glorified Jesus spoke these words in revealing to the Apostle John what was yet to come in the book of Revelation. Man’s greatest need is not economic security. It’s a future after death. Only Jesus can provide that future. Today: hope for the coming year.
