Resurrected Dreams #1 of 2

April 9, 2009
Early on, the disciples of Jesus argued over who would sit with Him in the kingdom. But when Jesus died, their dreams died. Their best-laid plans were in ruins. For some, the best thing to do seemed to be to simply walk away and forget those three wonderful years with Christ. Today: how the resurrected Jesus revived their dreams, and, how He can revive yours. Stay with us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. As banks fail and governments scramble to point blame, many people have serious doubts that anyone knows what they're doing. As we think of the resurrection of Jesus, we remember a doubting disciple who needed solid evidence before believing his Master was really alive. Jesus then showed him his wounded hands and side, saying, "Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed."

When we think of Palm Sunday, we think of adoring crowds cheering a King. We don't tend to think of a cursed fig tree. But just one day after riding into Jerusalem, Jesus did indeed curse a fig tree for not bearing fruit. As we come to understand this event, it's clear that our bearing fruit is very important to God. What are the implications for you and me?

We read the ads in the paper: "sale ends Tuesday." But we know there will soon be another sale, and so we're not impressed. But some opportunities really do have a limited time window. Jesus presented Himself to the nation Israel when He entered Jerusalem on a donkey. They rejected Him, and the city was later destroyed.

For believers in the race of life, the ultimate goal line is still ahead. When Christ returns, all our labors will end. The hope of Christ's return has motivated Christians for two thousand years. And that return in power is nearer now than ever. Only a few saw Jesus rise into heaven, but every eye will see Him return to vanquish His enemies. Today: the details continue.

There is coming a day for believers in which the race of this life will end. No more running...no more track, no more labor. That day is the bright hope for Christians...the day Jesus returns. That day will be like no other before or since. And because the scripture cannot be broken, that promised day is an absolute certainty.

Believers who run the race of the Christian life do not run alone. Christ ascended to bring many sons and daughters to glory. His ascension was "step one" in creating the church...the body of Christ on the earth, left here to bear witness to Him until His return. Only a few saw Jesus rise into the sky, but a multitude no man can number will see Him return.

He came as a babe in poverty. He left the earth in triumphant glory. And His departure foretells the power of His return. We who run the race of the Christian life know that Jesus is sitting even now at God's right hand. And His ascension into heaven opened its gates for us. Why is the ascension important? Surprisingly, it was the key to founding the church: the body of Christ.

We all know the Olympic games began in ancient Greece. We know that they involved runners, and races. But how do we know that? We know because historical writings tell us so. The same is true of Jesus and His resurrection...there is massive evidence that says He rose from the dead. Though naysayers may come and go, Christ's resurrection is as certain as any event in history.

If there's one thing ancient Rome was good at, it was executions. They had a perfect record: no one they killed ever lived again that is, until Jesus made the comeback of all time. When God raised Him from the dead, Christ was triumphant over death itself. And His resurrection guarantees that those who believe in him, though long dead, will one day rise as well.

When winning Olympians take home their gold medals, they don't hide them. They put them on display for their nations to see. The love of God was put on display when Jesus willingly went to the cross to die for our sins. His sacrifice was visible that day in Jerusalem, and, through the eye of faith, it's visible even now to those who trust Him for the salvation His death purchased.
