Rescued from Moral Self-Deception, Part 2 of 2

October 4, 2012
You can have your own opinion, but you can’t have your own truth. Truth is absolute and applies to everybody. In Romans 1, Paul reveals that mankind suppresses the truth, darkening their minds and committing moral perversion, all the while believing that they’re more enlightened than those who came before them.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into a dark closet. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are. We find that apart from God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we are morally bankrupt compared to the God who created us. Today we’ll probe the darkness of the human heart, and witness the amazing light God sheds into those hearts that come to believe in Jesus.

When a man is clinging to a life preserver, his sense of self-sufficiency is severely challenged. He knows he needs help. But in today’s culture, many people get offended if you tell them there is nothing they can do to make themselves look good before a holy God. The gospel tells us how God set out to rescue from spiritual death those that believe in His Son.

When you’re tossed overboard into a stormy sea, the most important thing on your mind is getting rescued. It’s a case of life or death. Humanity is drowning in the stormy sea of sin, and even though most don’t realize it, they’re headed for an eternal death. Sinners can’t save themselves, so God has given us a rescue plan from heaven.

When times are good, it’s not hard to go it alone. But when calamity strikes, you need a support system around you. The prophet Jeremiah compares this to being like a tree next to a stream, drawing nourishment so it can survive the drought. Believers facing a tough future need each other more than ever. This means connecting with fellow believers so that we all can bear fruit.

There comes a time in the decline of a nation when God will no longer delay judgment — then things get really bad. America may be at that point. Economic and social calamity will strike everyone, including believers. How should believers act and live when the really hard times come? This message contains guidance from an Old Testament prophet who saw times like ours coming.

The great tribulation can be traced to the rage of Satan, who wants one last chance to wreak havoc before facing doom — one last chance to shake his fist at God and His people — one last chance to get people to worship him instead of God. And of course, one last chance to destroy the faith of those still alive who believe in Jesus. Today we will learn how to overcome our mortal enemy the devil.

In Revelation 13, the future antichrist’s power is on display, and he’s slaughtering Christians. The antichrist is known as the beast. He forces the whole world to worship him using military and economic pressure. Without his mark, no one can buy or sell. Could any of us maintain our faith in Jesus during a time like this — when the choice is to worship the beast or die?

In ancient Rome, Christians were persecuted and killed by the thousands. If you think those days are over, think again. According to an article in the February 13, 2012 edition of Newsweek, Christians are being murdered for their faith from one end of the Muslim world to the other — and the mainstream media remains quiet. There is a war on to destroy the faith of believers in Christ, and this war is coming to our own shores. Today we ask ourselves what it would take for us to deny our faith.

Many people stash away cash in case the day of calamity comes. But what if your money is of no value on that day? To trust in riches is to trust in a vapor that passes away. James talks a great deal about economic justice for the poor, telling us that one day, our gold and silver will not buy anything. This message contains some stark lessons for a future that may be just around the corner.

Many people watch the stock market like a hawk. Some get nervous when the price of gold drops. We all need money. But one day the money we crave will be no more. One day, all that gives us security will vanish, and that is the day of final judgment. Then, what we are on the inside will be all that matters.
