Pornography: The Soul Defiled #1 of 2

August 14, 2008
We can't deny it. At root, all of us are sexual creatures, with appetites given to us by God to be used as He intended. Since we all have sexual desires, it's easy to be trapped into satisfying those desires outside of God's will. Today: a probing look at the damage done by the flood of pornography in our culture, a flood most prevalent these days on the internet.

Alcohol abuse has been with us since the dawn of history. Indeed, the Bible mentions drunkenness as a sign of God's judgment. Like quicksand, alcohol draws in its victims until they can no longer free themselves. The temptation to drink is best handled by never taking that first sip. Today, Pastor Erwin Lutzer wraps up an analysis of alcoholism, telling us why it's almost impossible to say, "I'm quitting tomorrow."

Drunk drivers... every day they kill more of our kids. Alcohol: it's the tolerated drug. Alcohol abuse is costing our society billions in lost productivity, lost relationships, and lost lives. And all too may Christians misuse what they feel is their freedom to drink by drinking one too many. Today: the unvarnished truth about alcoholism.

People who watch lottery winners on TV say to themselves, "Someday my number will come up. Just buy a few more tickets...." Then a few more, hundreds more, all in the vain hope of instant wealth. Gambling is the shortcut bypassing honest labor, the quick route to cash we all "deserve." Trouble is, for a Christian, it violates all God stands for. Today: a final look at the scourge of gambling.

Casinos know that gambling is a lousy deal, except for them. They call it "gaming" instead. Whatever the label: it's bad news. From lottery tickets to riverboats, gambling spells big trouble. Taking money from those who can least afford it, those hoping for a "big break." You say, "I'd never gamble." Don't be too sure: the lure of fast cash has led all too may Christians into serious trouble.

Americans love big houses. Not that they need the room to live in...no...they need the space for all their stuff. Most of us have too much stuff. In our greed we look at our neighbors, note their stuff, and we say, "I need the stuff they have." Greed is insidious...unless it's put to death, it will choke the life out of a Christian. Today: lessons on slaying the dragon of greed.

In a prosperous time, even committed Christians feel the tug of money. Greed lies like a serpent within our souls. Greed says "I want more." But the "more" is never enough. Greed is the first of the Seven Secret Snares that Erwin Lutzer is exposing during his current series. We all struggle with greed, and to learn how to break the power of greed in your life, stay with us.

The journey of the Christian life is rife with opportunities to get off track. We have an enemy who wants to derail our walk with God. He does this by appealing to our natural desires, and getting us to fulfill them in destructive ways. The devil does whatever it takes to get our minds off loving God. Today: more about a war from which there's no escape and how a Christian can best deflect temptation.

Someone said, "Life's no bed of roses." That's true, because even roses have their thorns. We face temptations every day. Temptations are Satan's way of drawing us away from God and toward destructive choices that can ruin our lives, families, and futures. We must shake off complacency, realizing that we're in a constant state of battle with our mortal enemy, the devil.

There's a time coming which could not be visualized even with the best high-tech computer graphics software ever devised. The return of Jesus to this earth will be the event of all time for this poor planet's inhabitants. When He comes, He will take control. And those who have loved and served him will be raised from the dead to greet him. Today: the climactic conclusion to our series on "What We Believe".

We live in the now...we remember the past. What's yet to come is unknown to us, but we can know where we're headed. Christians don't need crystal balls to see into the future. The Bible gives tantalizing details about a heavenly kingdom beyond description, a New Jerusalem with streets of gold. Today: a final look at What We Believe, and a peek through the mists of time into the timelessness of eternity.
