Casinos know that gambling is a lousy deal. They call it “gaming” instead. Whatever the label, it is bad news. Gambling spells big trouble, taking money from those who can least afford it, those hoping for a “big break.” You say, “I’d never gamble.” Do not be too sure: the lure of fast cash has led all too many Christians into serious trouble.

Americans love big houses. We use our houses to store the large amounts of possessions we have amassed. In our greed we look at our neighbors, notice their material belongings and say, “I need the stuff they have.” Greed is insidious unless it’s put to death, it will choke the life out of a Christian.

We face temptations every day. Temptations are Satan’s way of drawing us away from God and toward destructive choices that can ruin our lives, families, and futures. We must shake off complacency, realizing that we are in a constant state of battle with our mortal enemy, the devil.

In any community, there are leaders and followers. How we respond to those who can tell us what to do tells a lot about us. The Bible explains how slaves are expected to relate to their masters. In the culture of the first century, vast numbers of people were slaves. We can still draw valuable principles from today’s teaching in 1 Peter on how to respond to authority.

These days, a lot of people like to “do their own thing,” and some Christians take that approach when it comes to church attendance. All too many believers have withdrawn from a local fellowship, preferring to spend the Lord’s Day in other ways. The body of Christ can only help each member grow when each member follows God’s call to meet in groups on a regular basis.

When God said, “Be ye holy for I am holy,” He was commanding us to match his holiness. Having a right view of God automatically means we have a right view of sin, and, a desire to avoid it at all costs. As members of the body of Christ, we are called to lives marked by the joy of living in sync with God’s will and purpose, and that includes a separation from sin.
