Ninevah: An Unlikely Revival #2 of 2

December 8, 2010
Great cities of the Bible, places like Babylon, Jericho, and Jerusalem, all have a legacy for those who run life’s race today. That legacy consists of the lessons we can learn from how God dealt with those cities, and might then deal with our city. On this broadcast: lessons from ancient Ninevah, a city God visited with revival under the unwilling ministry of the prophet Jonah.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When you think of Bible characters who were athletes, you have to think of Jonah, who ran as fast as he could when God gave him a job to do. He ran away from Ninevah, an ancient city for which God had a special plan. Today, we will learn about this city, the God who showed it mercy, and the prophet who was unwilling to bring them the message God wanted them to hear.

If you think runners run fast, wait till you hear Erwin Lutzer race through the fascinating story of the history of Jerusalem. At the end of life’s race, every believer will one day call Jerusalem “home.” It’s a city like no other. Fought over for millennia, this city is at the epicenter of end-time prophecy and has a future beyond imagination. It is the city of God.

Athletes are used to taking laps around a track. But sending an entire army to march in a circle around a city seems futile, unless God says to do it. Jericho’s walls fell flat because Israel was obedient to God’s orders. Jericho’s sins had reached the point where its destruction was God’s judgment. Today: lessons we can take home from this episode in ancient Israel’s history.

When you think of marching around a track, perhaps the most memorable track is a large circle around the city of Jericho. Following the commands of God as relayed through Joshua, the armies of Israel marched around Jericho for seven days. Then they blew a trumpet, and the walls fell down flat: a bold statement of God’s judgment on a wicked city. Today: the story unfolds.

Runners in the race of life today need to know one thing never changes: God judges cities and nations that disobey Him. Ancient Babylon was destroyed by the Medes and the Persians after desecrating the temple in Jerusalem. For God, enough was indeed enough. Judgment may be delayed, but it’s always certain. However, Babylon lived on as it’s religion migrated elsewhere.

The city: for good or bad, it’s with us, a place of need and of opportunity for those who run life’s race to please God. Cities are places of achievement and desolation, places where the whole spectrum of the human condition is on display. More and more people throng to cities, and, as ambassadors for Christ, so must we. Today: we tour the first of six major cities in the Bible.

Being thankful should not be limited to Thanksgiving Day. Believers are commanded to “give thanks in everything,” all the time. Some will say, “Do you mean I’m to be thankful for calamity?” Today, we’ll sharpen our focus on why it is that we can, and must, be thankful, and why and how we can rejoice no matter what our circumstances are.

The Pilgrims could not have imagined the spreads most Americans will sit down to on this Thanksgiving Day. What a feast! The Bible tells us “in everything give thanks.” Does this mean being thankful for illness or loss? Does it mean being grateful for having no job? Today: why the Bible’s command to be thankful does make sense even when to us, it doesn’t. Please stay with us.

When you hit bottom, you know there’s not much farther to go. Alcoholics and drug addicts know this all too well. The Bible’s famous prodigal son demanded his inheritance, and spent it all in a big hurry. Reduced to eating with the pigs, he realized he needed to come home and face the dad who’d begged him not to leave. Today: what it takes to get a prodigal to reverse direction.
