Moving Beyond Your Past #3 of 3

August 20, 2010
Moses told Pharaoh, “Let my people go.” Only after doing so did Egypt have release from the judgments of God. When it comes to feelings about past injustice, we have to let our bitterness go as well. In a marriage, peace only comes after releasing our terrible memories into God’s hands. Forgiving your mate can help heal the deep wounds of a relationship on the rocks.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It’s like running a race with weights on your legs. Crippled by a secret past, many husbands and wives never feel free. Many bear enormous burdens from decisions they desperately wish they could undo. Keeping dark secrets from your mate takes a toll on your mind and heart, and only by coming clean can the past be faced, and a happier future enjoyed.

In a perfect world, every single person finds a perfect partner, and marriages begin and end in blissful happiness. But it’s not a perfect world. All of us bring baggage into our relationships, and those pasts can do great damage when they’re uncovered after we’re pronounced “man and wife.” Today we will learn how to face those pasts and move beyond them.

Love puts stars in the eyes of young couples. Often they overlook faults in each other that later prove stressful. The desire for marriage prevents some people from being realistic. Mr. Perfect turns out to be less so, and Miss Wonderful is found to have some less wonderful moments. Today we look at a few more character issues to look out for before tying the knot.

No doubt about it: marriage is in trouble. Not just because it’s being redefined by our media and culture. It’s in trouble because, even with the best of intentions, we mess up what should be a wonderful lifetime partnership. In many cases, we married despite clear warning signals that the match was not ideal.

Being a winning athlete means getting knocked around a lot. Most sports take quite a physical toll on those who strive for victory. It’s no different in the race of life. It’s only through some hard knocks that we learn to help others face their hard knocks. Learning to endure hardness was advice Paul gave, advice you and I need to hear in this age of self-gratification.

Many American Christians want what everybody else wants...success and security. Few want to take a towel to wash someone’s feet. Being a servant goes against our grain. But, in God’s eyes, it’s the servants who win in the race of life. Everybody likes servants as long as they don’t have to be servants. Ready for a paradigm shift? Stay with us today as we explore “The Discipline of Servanthood.”

There are times to feast, holiday times, times of celebration. But in the plan of God, there are also times to fast. Some of the tough laps in life’s race require the spiritual discipline of fasting. We see this in Jesus’ own 40-day example in the wilderness. Fasting means avoiding food altogether. That’s what Jesus needed. Could it be what you need as well?

Many of us don’t think twice about grabbing a Big Mac, large fries and a Coke at lunchtime. After all, when hungry, eat! But in God’s rules for the race of life, there are times to bypass the Golden Arches, and even bypass food altogether. Have you ever fasted for several days to deepen your prayer life? Before you say “you’ve got to be kidding,” listen with us.

For some in America, it’s perfectly acceptable to pursue money. Sports and media figures exemplify the accumulation of material wealth. But money can weigh us down in the race of life. Worse, it can turn our hearts away from God and toward pursuing even more money and the things it buys. God has some words to say to the rich, words you’ll hear on today’s Running to Win.

You can tell where a Christian’s values lie by examining his or her giving. One hallmark of a true believer is generosity. It’s a touchy subject, but we’re not afraid to hit the nail on the head as we focus on another of the spiritual disciplines that strengthen us in the race of life. Today we look at what God wants you to do with the resources He has provided.
