Lost in a House of Mirrors #2 of 2

November 24, 2008
A carnival house of mirrors is a lot of fun. First you're fat, then thin, then you're both. But at the exit, the real you comes out. Many people are deluded, seeing themselves as they want to, not as they are. One cause of this can be refusing to listen to the honest critiques of others. Today: more lessons from James on self-perception: and, on what it means to hear correctly.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When Timothy McVeigh went to his execution, America was left wondering how a decorated war veteran could've done something so evil. Many ask why seemingly good people turn bad. How can someone turn violent after a lifetime of apparent normalcy? The answer lies in understanding our fundamental human nature. It's not easy, but if you're willing to face the truth, stay with us.

When God showed Jeremiah how the nation Israel was under His control, He used the image of clay on a potter's wheel. Our nation, and your life and mine, are like that clay...under God's sovereign choice as to our shape and destiny. Lumps of clay depend on the potter to become something of value, and so must we. Today: more on what it means to be shaped by the Lord.

Every Christian faces trials, often heavy trials, and we may see no reason for the deep valleys through which we go....sudden bereavement, a job loss, serious illness....all of these may obscure the fact that God has an ultimate purpose. As clay on a potter's wheel, we are all being molded through our circumstances to become something beautiful. To see how, stay with us.

Jesus taught us to not worry. Yet many of us worry all the time. This causes stress, and erodes our spiritual power. We scan internet blogs looking for the latest threats to our freedom.....and yet Jesus told us to seek first His kingdom, and let Him handle our daily needs. If we truly do this, our anxieties will be gone. Want a new outlook, or re-directed focus?

All around us, turmoil threatens. The stock market plummets. Wars drag on, the economy falters, job prospects dim. Terrorism breeds fear and uncertainty....yet even with Middle East nuclear threats, there is a way to live above the fray, and to settle our anxious hearts. Imagine this scene...the worship team stops singing...the screens go dark...the audience fidgets...hey, what's going on here? For many, silence is uncomfortable. We want sensory input to fill all our waking hours. But the Bible teaches us to sometimes set it all aside...to live life from the center...from within...hearing in silence the voice of God.

If you had to sit for one hour in a totally quiet room, it might come as quite a shock. The silence would be deafening. There are times in running the race of life when we must shut out the noises we grow so accustomed to. Turn off the TV, the radio, and, yes, even the iPod. You'll find that what remains is the still, small voice of God. To learn more, stay with us.

We all know it is common courtesy to avoid tracking mud into someone's home when you are a guest. First: you get cleaned up. Then you can have fellowship with your host. The same is true with God. Worship cannot begin until we who seek to worship are clean inside. Today: join us for some lessons from the Bible on how to prepare our hearts for real worship.

It's become fashionable to consider worship a form of entertainment: the band plays, singers sing, and thus we "worship...." But real worship is not about how it makes us feel. Real worship is about our ascribing worth to God whether we feel like it or not. Today: some straight talk about what worship really is, and why it takes discipline to worship God properly.

Sometimes our prayers are not answered. Could it be that some of our well-meant prayers don't reflect God's agenda? There's a startling disconnect between the kinds of things the Apostle Paul prayed for, and the things most of us pray for. We focus on our physical needs, while God wants to work on our motivations. Today: learning to pray for the things God wants by praying His word back to Him.
