Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Some of us make New Year's resolutions, which are quickly broken. Today, you'll hear a challenge for one resolution you should keep. In Gethsemane, Jesus roused his sleeping disciples, asking "Could you not pray with me one hour?" Erwin Lutzer is placing that question before us today. As a new year dawns, let's covenant to set aside one hour a week for Jesus.

The Olive trees there are very old. They were younger when Jesus prayed before his execution on the cross. The location is Gethsemane: a place, even today, for tears. Here, Jesus asked His disciples to pray with him. They fell asleep, prompting the Savior to ask, "Could you not watch with me one hour?" Today: we ask that question anew.

If life was a bed of roses, we'd never appreciate how good roses smell. For Moses, the desert gave him that appreciation.... Herding sheep was Moses' lot for 40 years, a time during which God was preparing him for leadership beyond his wildest dreams. And many of us are now in the desert, learning lessons for a future day when we will understand why we needed to learn them.

Most of us know Moses parted the Red Sea as Egypt's Pharaoh "let his people go." Lesser known is how Moses got there.... The race of life for Moses led him through valleys as well as mountains. One of those valleys was a 40-year stint in the desert tending sheep: quite a comedown from his role at Pharaoh's palace. Today: a lesson on preparation for true leadership.

The people of Jesus' day were enslaved by the Roman Empire, eager for anyone to deliver them from Caesar's yoke.... That's why some saw in Jesus the deliverer that had been foretold. They wanted a leader to overthrow Rome's tyranny. But Jesus had a larger deliverance to make: a deliverance from the power of sin. On this Christmas Day: we'll see Jesus from God's vantage point.

In a Nazareth synagogue, Jesus opened a scroll of Isaiah the prophet and began to read. A hush fell over the audience.... He read of good news for the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, and liberty for the oppressed, ending by saying "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears." Only the Son of God could say that.

At Christmas, we share the joys of gift-giving and togetherness with family, "making merry," all because of Jesus. Jesus came in poverty that we might be rich. In fact, according to the prophecies of Isaiah, He came as a servant. Today: we continue our look at Christ the servant, the one whose life, death and resurrection make Christmas possible. Stay with us.

In general, kings do not perform the role of servants. They have a retinue of people whose sole job it is to serve the king's needs.... Jesus will return one day as King of Kings. But in His first coming He was a servant to the will of God, giving His life to save His people from their sins. Today: we begin a look into three chapters of Isaiah, chapters that reveal what kind of servant Jesus was.

Many people find Christmas discouraging. Perhaps they have no one to celebrate with...no one to give them a gift.... Let's let Isaiah the prophet lift our spirits by reminding us of the future reign of Christ the King on this earth. Indeed, the baby Jesus will be a baby no longer when his thousand-year reign of peace dispels the darkness of war and suffering.

Americans have little use for kings. Kings have absolute rule....that's why we declared independence in 1776. Kings have a total claim on people's lives, time, and taxes. We're not used to that these days...we see kings as relics of a bygone era. But today: we'll see why Christ is the long foretold King of Kings, and what that title means.
