Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Imagine this scene...the worship team stops singing...the screens go dark...the audience fidgets...hey, what's going on here? For many, silence is uncomfortable. We want sensory input to fill all our waking hours. But the Bible teaches us to sometimes set it all aside...to live life from the center...from within...hearing in silence the voice of God.

If you had to sit for one hour in a totally quiet room, it might come as quite a shock. The silence would be deafening. There are times in running the race of life when we must shut out the noises we grow so accustomed to. Turn off the TV, the radio, and, yes, even the iPod. You'll find that what remains is the still, small voice of God. To learn more, stay with us.

We all know it is common courtesy to avoid tracking mud into someone's home when you are a guest. First: you get cleaned up. Then you can have fellowship with your host. The same is true with God. Worship cannot begin until we who seek to worship are clean inside. Today: join us for some lessons from the Bible on how to prepare our hearts for real worship.

It's become fashionable to consider worship a form of entertainment: the band plays, singers sing, and thus we "worship...." But real worship is not about how it makes us feel. Real worship is about our ascribing worth to God whether we feel like it or not. Today: some straight talk about what worship really is, and why it takes discipline to worship God properly.

Sometimes our prayers are not answered. Could it be that some of our well-meant prayers don't reflect God's agenda? There's a startling disconnect between the kinds of things the Apostle Paul prayed for, and the things most of us pray for. We focus on our physical needs, while God wants to work on our motivations. Today: learning to pray for the things God wants by praying His word back to Him.

It's amazing that the God of the universe wants to have a close personal relationship with each of His children here on earth. Isaiah wrote, "They that wait upon the Lord shall run, and not be weary..." We gain strength for life's race by waiting on God through prayer, but only if we make prayer a priority. Today, we'll find out what it means to have a consistent, meaningful prayer life.

We've all seen the ad, "A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste." For a Christian, the mind is a crucial battleground. We can't run life's race if our minds are not disciplined. Through a din of competing voices, we need to hear the voice of God, and meditation in the Scriptures is the way God has commanded for us to do this. Are you hearing God's voice? Turn to Psalm 1, and stay with us.

Olympic runners: they don't get fast by lounging on the couch watching sports on TV. No, they go out and practice. Believers running life's race need to know that their effectiveness is determined by the disciplines of the Christian life, practiced every day, every week, every month, every year. Today, we begin a series that outlines four disciplines crucial to your spiritual maturity.

If you ask most Christians, "Do you want to be like Jesus?" they'd probably say "of course." Until they find out what it really means. Jesus renounced His privileges and humbled Himself to the point of permitting His own death. Unless we do the same, we will never reach the lost floating on a sea of moral relativity. Today: more about what it means to take the cross into the world.
November 4, 2008
There's a basic problem in evangelism: the world thinks the cross we preach about is foolish, but to us, it's the power of God. As we run the race of life as believers in Christ, how do we bring the message of the cross to a rejecting world? Today, on the advent of the election: some answers on how to have a real impact on those around us.
