Let God Redeem Your Story, Part 2a of 3

October 11, 2011
Sexual abuse almost never happens in healthy families. But in a day of dysfunctional families, abuse is rampant. To understand why people become sexual abusers, we need to understand the “why” of dysfunctional families. Today: a look at an Old Testament family scandalized by abuse and the awful damage that resulted. Then, we will see how God can heal the deep scars left behind.

But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Abuse can take many forms. But when that abuse is sexual, and when the young are abused, it’s a double tragedy. Psychological scars are left that may never be healed. All too many people cry every night for the childhoods they never had. One common experience abuse victims share is grief, that gnawing sadness that’s always just below the surface.

Perhaps the greatest tool the devil uses to corrupt our culture is sexual abuse of the young. The damage done is terrible. Psychological damage is only the first kind. Relationships throughout life suffer due to early experiences children should never have had. Today: hope for all who struggle with sexual abuse, and also, hope for those doing the abusing.

We cannot now comprehend the transformation that awaits us at the resurrection. It will be a moment of pure glory. Not only do we receive glorified bodies, but all of creation is transformed into a cosmic chorus shouting “glory” to the God who redeemed us. Today: the transcendant finale to the symphony of God’s glory, which is the end of time, and the beginning of a radiant eternity.

Some believe life is a random confluence of chemicals, and when life ends, we all cease to exist as our bodies decay. Believers have a much more glorious future. They know their decaying bodies will be raised at the return of Jesus, and that all who have ever believed will reign with Him for the ages to come. Which outcome seems more appealing to you? Today: a look at the end game of the glory of God.

Those who think there is no God and that life is the product of random chance have little hope when it comes to death. But those who believe in Jesus know that their times, and their times of death, are in God’s hands. They know that, even at that supreme moment, they can bring glory to the God who created them, and then redeemed them.

Even if we get “a new lease on life,” that lease will someday expire. All of us are on borrowed time, as one day, life will end. Believers who know the promises of God count on a life beyond this life. Meanwhile, we live to bring glory to God. At the end, even in our death, we are to glorify God. Today we will see the how and why of living a life in such a manner that when it’s over, God receives glory.

Human nature is a tough thing to change. We develop habits almost impossible to break. But there is one route to transformation. When the Spirit of God indwells a believer, he or she embarks on a journey whose end is being like Christ: transformed from the inside out by the glory of God. This is how a sinner can become a saint; how beholding God leads to our becoming like God.

When Moses came down from the mountain, he had to veil his face. God’s glory was making it light up like the sun. Believers share this hope, “And we with unveiled face beholding the glory of the Lord are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” We can be transformed into God’s image when we abandon the hold sin has on our lives.

Life is no bed of roses. Sooner or later, everybody has pain. Everyone loses a loved one and all of us face the end of life. Believers know that God has a purpose in their suffering, a purpose they cannot fathom while going through the deep valley. Taking the long view of life, and realizing that the ultimate good of God’s glory far outweighs the immediate ruts we encounter in the race of life.

Hurting is part of life. Ask anyone in a cancer ward, facing a painful end of life with an incurable tumor. No one is exempt from suffering. Sooner or later, we will all experience it.  Despite this truth, believers can hope. We are promised that suffering for the sake of Jesus will be rewarded.
