Judging Doctrine #2 of 2

August 5, 2009
There's no doctrine more important than the doctrine of salvation: the gospel. Without it, we face a cold, dark, eternity. There is no room for error or opinion when your soul is at stake. What you and I need is the truth, and nothing but the truth. Today: the core components of the gospel, and why any teaching that omits them or distorts them is heresy.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. If you watch enough religious cable TV, you'll be totally confused about which doctrines are true and which are false. In the marketplace of religious ideas, packaging and glitz often carry more weight than biblical truth. Today: you'll hear a pointed call to return to a standard against which doctrines must be measured...doctrines that impact your eternal destiny.

When seeing the faults of others, our vision is 20/20. But it's 20/200 when focusing on our own faults. Jesus taught us to not judge a small splinter in someone else's eye without first removing the large wood beam from our own eye. That principle is found in Matthew chapter 7...and it's our focus on today's broadcast. So...how's your eye today?

Turn on your cable TV, and you'll see a variety of religious experiences. Are they all valid? And, is it even OK to ask? There is much error mixed with truth these days, and so the wise believer runs what he or she sees through a filter of discernment. Today: a foundational study in Matthew chapter 7 to help us know when, and how, to judge what we see.

It's easy to fit in, to follow the crowd, to blend with the trend, to accept whatever we encounter without question. But we're called to run life's race, not in the well-worn ruts, but on the high ground of God's word. Today: why we must discern right from wrong, and truth from error. Otherwise, we'll have little, if any, impact on a world in dire need of Jesus.

Years ago, people could see a big difference between the world and the church. Sadly, that difference is fast disappearing. Now, many of us attend the same movies, listen to the same music, and pursue the good life like everybody else. Politics and the economy occupy most of our thinking. Many fear that evangelical distinctives are fading away. It's high time for some straight talk about what can be done.

When someone attacks you for your faith, what's your best response? After all, argument usually goes nowhere. We're told to wear the armor of God, and to wield the sword of the Spirit, which the Bible says is the word of God. It's not just a book, it's alive...it has power, and it's the means God uses to open closed hearts to the gospel. Today, a last look at Ephesians chapter six.

There's no doubt: all who name the name of Christ are in a lifelong battle. We have an enemy who never gets tired. That's why we've been given the armor of God: five pieces for self-defense, and one weapon with which we can strike back at Satan. That weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, a weapon that can cut to the very heart of man, convicting of sin and birthing new life.

It's tough to not know who your parents are. Many kids are wounded for life by never knowing to whom they belong. It's also tough to grow in the Christian life without the assurance that you are a child of God. Some say salvation can be lost, regained, and then lost again. Today: why it's so crucial to settle the question of knowing you have eternal life.

We've all heard the phrase, "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." It's also a terrible thing to let fall into Satan's influence. Someone else has said, "What you think, you are." It's vital to protect our minds from the devil's attacks. And the helmet of salvation is just what we need when doubts arise about our status as God's children. Today: how to use yet another piece of the armor of God.

There are times in the life of every believer when things get so bad that we doubt God's care. That's when Satan strikes. Flaming arrows come our way challenging our faith, making us question if God is truly good. Today: why you and I need the shield of faith to deflect these missiles of doubt, and, how we're to use this piece of spiritual armor.
