Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Many people who seek miracles today travel to shrines or large public meetings. In Jesus’ day, that was not necessary. His miracles transcended time and space. He spoke, and it was done, whether right in front of Him or twenty miles away. Today: the power and glory of miracles done at a distance. Miracles that should, indeed, be convincing.

We have all heard the expression “good things come to those who wait.” That was never truer than it was at a simple Jewish wedding. When Jesus turned water into wine as the wedding party was nearing its end. He took the least and made it into the best. Today: more about Christ’s first miracle at Cana, one of many proving He was and is the Son of God.

It was a small wedding in a small town. But when the wine ran out, a typical wedding quickly became very untypical, as a wedding guest, Jesus, emerged from anonymity by performing His first miracle. That day, gallons of water were turned into the sweetest of wines. Veteran tasters there in Cana rated the result: “wow.” So what was the purpose of this miracle?

What do you think is the greatest miracle that has ever taken place? Was it God creating a trillion stars or billions of living things? No, as Erwin Lutzer explains it, God’s greatest miracle was the Word becoming flesh as expressed in the gospel of John chapter 1 verse 14.  We will look at why that miracle reigns supreme, and why it matters more than any other miracle we could experience.

When all your options are gone, when there is no other way, when your back is against the wall, what do you pray for? You pray for a miracle. All of us have hoped for one at one time or another. What are miracles? What is their purpose? And do we see them today?

If you ever wanted to know how God feels when we turn to Him in repentance, take a long look at Luke chapter 1. All of us are prodigal sons, and our Father rejoices when we come back to Him. But some of us are like the elder brother who cried “unfair” when his sinning brother sought forgiveness. Today we will look at what Jesus thinks about the lost people in your life.

Many runners seek fame, fortune, or the glory of Olympic gold. Christians running life’s race have a different motive. Believers run to please Jesus, the Author and Finisher of their faith. They want to advance His kingdom, and bring people to know Him personally. So, what’s involved in seeking the lost?

The race of life often takes Christians into the heart of town. And as believers follow Christ there, amazing things can happen. When Jesus comes to town, revival often follows. People are convicted of sin, restitution is made, and spiritual life flows where it never had before. Has Jesus come to your town? If not, would you like Him to?

As a believer, you run life’s race on a track made just for you. Your road is not always easy, but its end is sure. We get to the goal by faithfully following Christ, who lived His life to minister to people. Taking His gospel to needy people is our primary reason for running the race. So, are you making an impact in your area of influence?

If you think that trusting Christ guarantees that all of your pathways will be strewn with roses, you might want to think again. Many of Christ’s paths were paths of suffering. If we are serious about following Him, sooner or later we’ll find ourselves leaving the oasis and heading into the wilderness. God does this for a reason.
