He Owns Our Tongues # 1 of 2

June 19, 2008
It's said that "the pen is mightier than the sword." Yes, words are powerful, and when spoken, they can cut like swords. If we could rewind the tapes of our lives and hear all we've said, we'd be shocked. We'd all wish we could press the "erase" button. Yes, our tongues can be lethal weapons. Only under God's control can they bring blessing rather than cursing.

The message is clear. Our culture and the media tell us to "look out for number one." In a way, they're right. Running the race of life involves understanding who's in charge. Once we realize that "number one" is not us, the race gets a lot easier. Today, let's take the first step in living life with God in firm control, as was the case in the early church. Open your Bible to the book of Acts.

Today, a final challenge: a challenge for parents to get involved in the lives of those precious children, and thereby reclaim their families.

Bitterness can last a long time. Once begun, it can infect others, causing generations to hate future generations. King David let bad situations fester in his family until the poison burst out in civil strife. Let's resolve to learn from the mistakes of an otherwise great man, and deal with unresolved matters long before they explode. Today, how to do just that.

As the wise proverb tells us, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Israel's King David was a great leader, a noted military commander, a "man after God's own heart," and....a lousy father. Today: the Bible's honest portrayal of David, and the great damage done by his failure as a dad. For lessons on what not to do as a parent, stay with us.
