Filling jobs usually means resumés, interviews, and salary offers. But it is a very different story in the body of Christ. God has called each believer to a task in His kingdom, and the book of Acts shows us how He makes His calling known. Today we will meet God’s personnel department for your local church. As you go in, be sure of this, there is a job waiting for you.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. In our culture, reaching the top often means clawing your way past other people, doing whatever it takes to succeed. Things are very different in God’s kingdom. As Jesus said, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” In the early church, leadership was demonstrated by servanthood.

As we all know, money and politics are closely related. People who support winning candidates expect something in return. Sadly, the same can be true in churches. Heavy contributors are often the heavy decision-makers. This may have played a part in the motivations of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5, a story of God purifying the motives of givers in the early church.

We would all save a lot of energy if our behavior matched our character. We would no longer need to maintain an image. Many people worry about how they are perceived. They will smile on the outside while crying on the inside; their lives are an act for the benefit of others. There is good news! We can lose the game face, because in the final analysis God is in charge of our reputations.

The love of money is the root of all evil, yet in this world we cannot function without money. How can a Christian properly handle money? If we recognize God’s laws of stewardship, we can be freed from the possible negatives of having money. When we are no longer owners, but rather, caretakers of financial resources, the whole picture changes. This picture can be clearly seen in Acts 4.

Win a hundred million dollars in a lottery and you will become an instant media star. These days, people dream of the big bucks and many will lie, cheat, and steal to get it. Yet once they have what they wanted, it often corrupts people from the inside out. All that glitters is not gold. How can a Christian properly handle his money and stay free of its addictive allure?

The rights of believers to exercise their religion in America are being slowly destroyed. Clearly, persecution is coming. What do we do when faced with tough choices? Choices to obey God or man? The book of Acts gives us a blueprint on how to handle suffering for Christ, and there may be a lot of that awaiting us in the days to come.

How often we have wished we could retract words we have spoken in haste or in anger, words that have wounded those around us. While some argue about speaking in tongues, there is one gift of tongues all believers should have, the gift of a tongue controlled by the Holy Spirit, a tongue that always edifies and never tears down.

It is said that “the pen is mightier than the sword.” Yes, words are powerful, and when spoken, they can cut like swords. If we could rewind the tapes of our lives and hear all we have said, we would be shocked. We would wish we could press the “erase” button. Yes, our tongues can be lethal weapons. Only under God’s control can they bring blessing rather than cursing.

As a runner heads into the last turn, sometimes his energy begins to run out. What he needs then is a source of power. Like runners getting a second wind, we are not left to carry out the Great Commission without resources. Jesus promised His disciples power, and when He has first place in our lives, that power begins to flow. How do we receive it?

The message is clear. Our culture and the media tell us to “look out for number one.” In a way, they are right. Running the race of life involves understanding who is in charge. Once we realize that “number one” is not us, the race gets a lot easier. Let’s take the first step in living life with God in firm control, as was the case in the early church. Open your Bible to the book of Acts.
