Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. While we focus every day on the here and now, eternity awaits us. Those who know Christ have a glorious future ahead of them. The doorway to heaven is the death of the believer. When Stephen was martyred, he had a vision of Jesus welcoming him home. For those who fear death, be encouraged, this can be your vision as well.

Most of us invest heavily in our futures. Savings accounts and retirement plans give us comfort for those “golden years. But wise believers know that the real future lies in the hands of God, not in any plans we can make. Like the martyr, Stephen, our ultimate destiny lies beyond this life. Today you will hear about the glorious eternal future ahead for a child of God.

In seeking employees, interviewers look for the right education and experience. But for workers in the body of Christ, the goal is different. God has a list of qualifications for kingdom jobs. It includes character and spiritual. Today we will help you find your way into the place God has for you in a local church.

In our culture, reaching the top often means clawing your way past other people, doing whatever it takes to succeed. Things are different in God’s kingdom. Jesus said, “The first shall be last, and the last shall be first.” In the early church, leadership was demonstrated by servant hood. Today we look at how to get ahead, God’s way.

As we all know, money and politics are closely related. People who support winning candidates expect something in return. Sadly, the same can be true in churches. Heavy contributors are often the decision makers. This may have played a part in the motivations of Ananias and Sapphira, two manipulative people in Acts chapter five.

We would all save a lot of energy if we were the same person on the inside as we seem to be on the outside. Most people worry about how people perceive them. So, we will smile, even when we feel like crying. Our lives are often an act for the benefit of others. We can lose the game face because, in the final analysis, God is in charge of our reputations.

The love of money is the root of all evil, yet in this world we cannot function without money. What can a Christian do? If we recognize God’s laws of stewardship, we can be freed from the temptations of money. When we realize that we are caretakers rather than owners of the financial resources we are given, the whole picture changes. And this picture can be clearly seen in Acts chapter 4.

Win a hundred million dollars in a lottery and you’re an instant media star. In tough times, people dream of the big bucks and they’ll lie, cheat, and steal to get those bucks. Yet once they have them, those dollars often corrupt people from the inside out. How can a Christian properly handle his cash, yet stay free of its addictive allure?

When we hear of Christians persecuted for their faith, we often think of high profile people like preachers or missionaries. But a day is coming when ordinary believers will feel the heat as the rising hatred of Christ brings suffering on a wide scale. Our allegiance to Jesus will be tested and we will be sifted like wheat to see if we are the real grain, or merely useless chaff.

The rights of American believers to exercise their religion are now being destroyed, bit by bit. Clearly, persecution is coming. What do we do when faced with tough choices? Choices where we need to decide if we will obey God or man? The book of Acts gives us a blueprint on how to handle suffering for Christ and there may be a lot of that awaiting us in the days ahead. It's time for a much-needed reality check.
