When God said, “Be ye holy for I am holy,” He was commanding us to match his holiness. Having a right view of God automatically means we have a right view of sin, and, a desire to avoid it at all costs. Some people think holiness is joylessness. In fact, the opposite is true: we find joy in being set apart for God. It is easy to let the world press us into its mold, to conform us to what our culture expects. But God has a higher calling for His own: they are to enjoy the fruits of holy living. God clearly said, “Be ye holy for I am holy.”

Life on earth is an exam to determine the genuineness of our faith. The test score will be announced when Jesus returns. The Apostle Peter wrote of the believer’s living hope, a hope that becomes reality when Jesus appears, the One we love despite having never seen. The result is “joy unspeakable and full of glory.”

When you read the headlines, the future looks pretty dark. We are in the midst of financial upheaval, wars, terrorism, natural disasters. In spite of these trials, believers in the race of life know the goal line is not affected by this present darkness. Peter wrote that we are born again to a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Even if you have gotten “a new lease on life,” that lease will one day expire. What kind of legacy will you leave behind? Paul could say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Before his death, the Apostle Peter stirred up his readers toward fruitful growth in the faith. Today, we assess the impact of the life of Peter on those he knew, and, on all the generations to follow.

Great runners may feel invincible. While earthly victories come and go, there is a sense in which believers are invincible. Peter knew that his race of life would not end by execution in a jail cell. But when an angel opened the prison doors, the young church could not believe that Paul was miraculously free. Then again, would we have thought any differently?

As Christians mature, they eventually realize that there is Someone carefully orchestrating the symphony of their lives. As we run life’s race, we know that God goes before us to make sure the track is just the way He wants it. That is what happened for the Apostle Peter, and that is also what happens for you and me. For believers in the race of life, that second wind is the power of the Holy Spirit, who bears witness to Christ. The change in Peter from fisherman to fearless preacher is a testimony to the power of the Holy Spirit to remake a man. In the spirit’s power, we too can run life’s race to please Jesus, Who is the Author and Finisher of our Faith. We can run that race like Peter, sure of our eternal destiny, and endued with power from on high to do the Master’s will.
