God's Glory in Our Suffering #2 of 2

September 28, 2011
Life is no bed of roses. Sooner or later, everybody has pain. Everyone loses a loved one and all of us face the end of life. Believers know that God has a purpose in their suffering, a purpose they cannot fathom while going through the deep valley. Taking the long view of life, and realizing that the ultimate good of God’s glory far outweighs the immediate ruts we encounter in the race of life.

Hurting is part of life. Ask anyone in a cancer ward, facing a painful end of life with an incurable tumor. No one is exempt from suffering. Sooner or later, we will all experience it.  Despite this truth, believers can hope. We are promised that suffering for the sake of Jesus will be rewarded.

It is said that “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” as if moral choices have no consequences. The truth is: that’s a lie. One way for believers to handle the temptation of sex outside marriage is to realize Who they take with them to bed. God Himself is a witness to all they do there since they are indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Signs of the times: members of Congress are forced to resign when their sexual indescretions come to light. Everyone has to deal with sex since everyone was created a sexual being. No area of life is as challenging for a believer. First Corinthians was written to a church with serious moral issues.

In times of economic downturn, many have to take jobs beneath their skills and education. Would this be hard for you? Letting go of pride and accepting where you are as God’s place for you is humbling. At some point, any job beats no job. We must come to grips with God’s glory as your focus, and let Him orchestrate your promotions as well as demotions.

When economic hard times hit, people lose jobs, homes, and their self-respect. Even those still employed feel the heat. Fewer people work harder for companies to survive. Many people take jobs far beneath their skill levels. The American lifestyle is an endangered species as we learn to do with less.

A person blind from birth can only guess at what it would be like to be able to see. Light has little meaning to one in darkness. “The light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…” That is what Paul says the devil blinds people from seeing. It is a light God wants to shine on all who receive the redemption He offers through His Son.

God desires that all of His creation glorify Him. After all, no one is more worthy than He to receive the glory He deserves. At the core of God’s desire to bring glory to Himself is the plan of redemption He designed long before humanity came into being. Bringing many sons and daughters to glory was His intention even though He knew mankind would fall in the Garden of Eden.

Buildings don’t last very long if their foundations are not secure. Sinking sand has sunk more than one house not built on a rock. The church has a rock-solid foundation since Jesus is the church’s cornerstone. But we as believers are a part of that building, since we are called “living stones” by the Apostle Peter.

Why do you go to church? To visit with friends? To hear some inspiring music? To be seen by others whose opinion you value? Believers need a better reason for attending church. And that reason is to meet God, and further extend and extol His glory. We gather to express to God His worth to us, which is what the word “worship” is all about.

Moses was privileged to have a very intimate relationship with God. His reaction? “I beseech Thee, O Lord, show me thy glory.” God’s glory is easy to lose sight of. All it takes is one small sin. In the Old Testament, the glory of God would come and go, and in the end, it departed, never to return, as the people of Israel’s sins caused God to draw back his favor. In our day, sin still limits our appreciation of God’s glory.
