God's Glory in Our Church #1 of 2

September 15, 2011
Why do you go to church? To visit with friends? To hear some inspiring music? To be seen by others whose opinion you value? Believers need a better reason for attending church. And that reason is to meet God, and further extend and extol His glory. We gather to express to God His worth to us, which is what the word “worship” is all about.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Moses was privileged to have a very intimate relationship with God. His reaction? “I beseech Thee, O Lord, show me thy glory.” God’s glory is easy to lose sight of. All it takes is one small sin. In the Old Testament, the glory of God would come and go, and in the end, it departed, never to return, as the people of Israel’s sins caused God to draw back his favor. In our day, sin still limits our appreciation of God’s glory.

Why does an Olympic track star run? To win a gold medal. So, what motivates us as believers to run the race of life? As we mature in the faith, we come to realize more and more that it’s not about us. It’s about God….God whose glory fills the earth and the heavens. When we see our lives as part of a much larger plan, we begin to understand that enhancing God’s glory is what life is all about.

Like the serpent that beguiled Eve, Satanic substitutes for God look good. That is why the occult is so popular, but the occult’s teachings are the doctrines of demons. These doctrines that bring death rather than life. As believers, it is vital for us to understand what the Bible calls “sound doctrine.” That way, we can better discern Satanic teachings that try to mask as Scriptural truth.

The occult is more than Ouija boards. It is a trap we must avoid like the plague. Our culture is tuned to the frequency of occult phenomona like never before. Whether by internet, TV, movies, or music, the occult is underscoring more and more of our culture’s values.

We have got a hundred TV channels, 22 theater screens, DVDs, computers, and the World Wide Web. Who needs more? Today’s Christians are awash in a sea of pleasures with time for everything but God. We are tempted to waste our time in a myriad of ways, and the options only keep increasing.

The TV commercial once said: “You only go around once in life. Grab all the gusto you can.” Hmmm. Not a bad idea, but the gusto you should grab is probably not what most people have in mind. The media has fed us a lie about what brings real satisfaction.

If we could see the scars we will bear when we break God’s laws on sexual behavior, we would never break them in the first place. God designed sex at its best to be in a covenant marriage relationship, not in a succession of one-night stands. Today we explore the allure of sexual affairs, which poison our souls and undermine our ability to make commitments.

Watch prime-time TV for two hours. You’ll think that extramarital sex and divorce are choices we can freely make. Yes, we are free all right, free to ruin our lives and the lives of others. Driven by lust, too many people, even Christians, find themselves paying a high price in the long run. The sexual revolution has a dark side and we had better count the cost.

The Sermon on the Mount is best known for its sublime Beatitudes: like “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven…” But many forget that Jesus went on to give some very pointed teaching on morality: going so far as to tell those in lust to pluck out their eyes.  Could He have been serious?

At root, all of us are sexual creatures, with appetites given to us by God to be used as He intended, and since we all have sexual desires, it is easy to be trapped into satisfying those desires outside of God’s will. Today’s message is a probing look at the damage done by the flood of pornography in our culture, a flood most prevalent these days on the internet.
