Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When a potter throws clay on the wheel, that clay has no choice about what it’s going to become. As the Potter, God is in charge of us—the clay. He has a purpose we can’t see, a purpose that takes us through the fire so that we are suitable for His service.

Many believers have never seen themselves as clay on a potter’s wheel, being molded to suit the Potter’s purposes. But the sooner we do, the sooner we’ll be fruitful members of the body of Christ. Let’s travel to Israel for lessons from a wheel and a furnace.

Believers are told to “give thanks in everything.” Some will say, “Do you mean I’m to be thankful for calamity?” Let’s sharpen our focus on why we can and must be thankful, and how we can rejoice no matter what the circumstances.

No earthly possessions will accompany us into the recreated world. So why are our lives so consumed with possessions and wealth? Jesus told a story about a man who had a lot and wanted more. One night the man’s life was taken. His passion for wealth proved to be meaningless.

In a shaky market, people wonder where to invest their money. Jesus taught a lesson on ultimate investments. He counsels believers to invest in God’s kingdom, because only in eternity will the true interest rate be on display.

A wealthy man decided to fire a manager. So the manager cut some deals with the master’s creditors to curry favor, to have options once his job ended. Jesus made this story into a parable about investments. But why did Christ commend a man who acted improperly?
