God Is More Tolerant than He Used to Be, Part 2 of 2

March 6, 2012
In Old Testament times, it was often easier to see God’s hand at work in judging sin; today, though, it can feel as though sin is going unpunished. Why? In order to answer this question, we must understand God’s character and His choice to bear “with great patience the objects of his wrath” (Romans 9:22). To believe that God has changed is to believe a dangerous lie — a lie you can’t afford to believe.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Many people believe man evolved, and many people believe God has evolved as well. He’s no longer “mean,” He is now a kinder, gentler God — He is more tolerant than He used to be. Get set, because in today’s message, another myth is going to be debunked.

A lot of people think that they can come to God any way they like, but God can only be approached in one way. Pause and consider this: what you think about God might be fundamentally wrong. Lay aside your preconceptions and listen to what God Himself says about how to find Him. Coming to God only happens through the right mediator.

If you believe a lie long enough, it becomes your truth. Many of us harbor falsehoods that can send us to hell. Please stop long enough to consider that you may be among those who believe wrongly about God. This is serious stuff — nothing is more important than what you believe about Him.

John Newton wrote about the “Amazing Grace that saved a wretch like me.” We like the song, but we are not so sure about that “wretch” part. The fact is, we cannot win in life’s race without agreeing with God about our basic condition. We need His grace, not to supplement our goodness, but to save us from our depravity. Today we will hear some straight talk about how badly we need the grace of God.

Many philosophers have seen a dual nature in mankind: good and evil coexisting, both fighting for ultimate control. The Bible paints a different picture, one of a basic depravity that can only be remedied by the grace of God through Christ. Throughout today’s message, we will see a big picture view of who we are, and how we can be made good in the eyes of God.

Exposing ourselves to the light of God’s truth can be painful. It’s not a pretty sight to see ourselves for who we really are. Coming clean before God has infinite rewards, including being able to run life’s race without the weight of accumulated sin. Let’s turn to the book of 1 John and learn what is involved in coming to the light.

Under cover of darkness, criminals steal, kill and destroy. When they are brought to justice, we speak of “bringing their deeds to light.” The light cuts the darkness like a knife. It reveals that our hearts are full of deception, even if we are not convicted criminals. Today, let the light of God’s Word cut through your illusions and show you what God sees when He peers into your soul.

Control freaks are obsessed with themselves. It’s sad, but true. By subjugating others, they seek to elevate their own importance. At some point, such people become evil, as did King Saul of Israel. Today, we’ll trace the life of a man who would not let go of his kingdom even when God told him to. Do you know any people like this? Join us, for more of their characteristics, and how to deal with them.

Some people are so consumed with their own importance that they seek to control the lives of those around them to prove their worth. Such behavior is destructive, and can ruin the race of life for the oppressed as well as the oppressor. Today, we turn the light of Scripture on the lives of so-called “control freaks” by examining the life of King Saul of Israel.
