Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Many people have long-term health issues. When they pray for healing, the answer appears to be an ongoing “no.” They hear the verse, “my strength is made perfect in weakness,” and wish their answer had been “here’s the healing you seek.” Are you disappointed with God?

When Christians are in need, they naturally pray for God to provide. Sometimes the answer is “no.” How we react to that “no” is crucial. We must come to understand that even the “no” answers are still answers.

It’s tough taking “no” for an answer. But there are times when the answer to a believer’s prayer is a clear “no.” We have a choice: these times can either make us resentful, or they can increase our faith.

Habakkuk the prophet’s complaints belong on today’s front page. Evildoers are having a field day, and the foundations of the nation are being torn apart. Yet in the midst of turmoil, the prophet has a burst of faith that God is still in charge.

Our nation seems to be heading in a downward spiral. It’s like the scenario painted by Habakkuk the prophet: things were bad and getting worse. Like us, he was asking God, “Where are You?”

When God answers prayer in ways we don’t expect, we’re reminded that it’s Him we really need, not the answers. Let’s make sure our relationships with God are strong, realizing that knowing Him is more vital than getting what we want.

Prayer is a kind of mystery. We’re commanded to ask in faith, without doubting. But the answers sometimes come from unexpected directions, even unrelated to what we asked for. They are answers in disguise.

God gave Abraham promises that would not come to pass for hundreds of years. Next time you feel like God is a bit slow to answer your prayers, remember that His scale of time is bigger than yours. He has a larger agenda.
October 15, 2015
When we pray for something, we hope for a quick response from God. But God has His own clock which is not always in sync with ours. How do we handle prayers that are time-critical for us, when God’s answers seem to never come?
