Following The Right Leader #1 of 2

July 8, 2011
When you run a race, one thing is critical. You have to keep your eye on who is out in front, the runner who is setting the pace. As believers, we run life’s race to please Jesus, Who sets the pace as the Author and Finisher of our faith. He is the leader we are eager to follow. Peter will learn a great lesson from his new Leader, a lesson on trusting beyond his own experience.

Before Peter became a great apostle, he was a simple fisherman. When Christ calls someone, that person’s life is forever transformed. We run life’s race to please Jesus, Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith.  Jesus called Peter from his life by the sea to a life he could never have imagined. For his new task, Peter had to accept a new name from his new Master.

The cinder track stretches before you. You know you have to run like there is no tomorrow. This could be your final sprint. The Bible tells us to run life’s race to glorify and please Jesus, Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. Today we will begin a series on the life of a man who ran his race just like that, a man whose life still towers as a champion for the gospel.

Tyranny sets in fast when a nation’s leaders stop acknowledging their accountability to a higher power. As the U.S. government decides which laws to enforce, we end up with laws that contravene not just the Constitution, but common sense. Today we will look at why America is fast approaching the cliff of despotism, while freedom is extinguished by those in power.

Only a few remember the horrors of Nazi Germany. History has a way of re-writing itself to hide bad memories. Germany struggled through economic ruin in the decade of the 1930’s. America may be moving in the same direction. Germany listened to a man who promised a way out to a new era of national greatness. This man who promised hope instead started a World War. What happens if we, too, forget God?

Behind every move in Joseph’s life we see God’s hand. Whether in a prison, or in a palace, God was working out a plan, and God has a plan for you and for me, a dream He wants to see brought to pass. If your life seems haphazard, take hope. Today we will learn more about the providence of God as He works His will through the fabric of our choices, and those of our enemy the devil.

It was a long road from a pit in Canaan to a palace in Egypt. For Joseph, God’s dream had been fulfilled. The fate of men and nations depended on one man holding on to a dream God had given him. That dream was one component in the providence of God: God directing all events toward His intended purpose. Today we will learn about the mysterious providence of God.

The story of Joseph in Egypt is one of high drama: a former slave judges the brothers who sold him years before. In the tapestry of God, a plan was unfolding to save two nations, a plan of such ingenuity that only God could have crafted it. In the process, a man’s character was being refined, and that is perhaps the real purpose of God in testing the dreams He gives.

When the dreams we cherish most come from God rather than from within, we can be sure that those dreams will come to pass. Joseph’s dream was almost destroyed by frightful circumstances. But God saw to it that his dream’s fulfillment had international consequences. There was a far bigger purpose at work than Joseph even realized. And the same may be true for you.

The Apostle Paul learned how to be abased, and how to abound. In the Old Testament, Joseph learned the same thing, rather quickly. One minute he’s in jail. The next, he’s vice-regent of Egypt. But he kept it all in perspective: he knew that God was working out a plan, a plan placed into his heart in a dream. So, how’s your dream coming?
June 27, 2011
Some people falter at the least obstacle placed in their way. Others see the long-range goal, and face their problems with courage, but few of us have ever faced the trials Joseph faced. Between this man and his dream lay injustice, treachery, slavery, and prison. Indeed, his dream was sorely tested. How long could you hang on to your dream under circumstances like these?
