Following Christ Into The Desert #1 of 2

March 24, 2011
Not all of life’s roads take us through pleasant places. Sometimes the way leads into the desert, and there we must go. Believers follow Jesus at His command. His road was never easy, and if we walk in His steps, some of those steps will be tough ones. Today: what it means to follow Christ into a place not found in too many travel brochures.

Down through the centuries, faithful followers of Christ have sought to live as He would have them live, asking “What Would Jesus Do?” The Apostle Peter says, “Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example that we should follow in His steps.” Following in those steps requires us to make fundamental changes in our priorities.

Businesses analyze “what-if” scenarios. So, “what if” a believer, running life’s race, really did what Jesus would do? That’s what Charles Sheldon asked when writing the classic novel “In His Steps.” The answers then were radical, but what about today? What would Jesus do? In a moment, Running to Win will ask that provocative question anew.

“You do your thing, and I’ll do mine.” That’s today’s mantra of tolerance. But in terms of salvation, only one thing matters. Faith in Christ is the non-negotiable factor than transforms people from darkness to light, and changes their destinies from hell to heaven. Nothing is more important to understand, and today you’ll hear a crystal-clear explanation.

People with no hope beyond this life live only for this life. Their motto: “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” Believers in Christ look forward to a certain home in heaven. And this outlook turns their inward look to an upward look, a look full of promise and hope. This hope is something we can share with all who ask us why we have that hope. Do you have that hope?

A baseball legend once pointed to center field, showing where the next pitch was going. The crowd roared as the ball left the park. Babe Ruth knew where that ball was going. And Christians can know where they’re going after death. That’s because our assurance of salvation is built on three pillars in the scriptures, none of which is in any danger of being toppled.

When a group of runners hits the track, not one of them can be certain that he will finish the race first, or, even finish at all. But in the race of the Christian life, it is possible to be certain that you will finish at last in heaven. And knowing your destiny makes all the trials of life bearable. The assurance of salvation: that’s our focus on today’s broadcast.

The thrill of winning a marathon race is deep and fulfilling. Holding the victory cup makes all the training worthwhile. But a greater joy awaits those who, through the new birth, begin their own race on the track of the Christian life. And after the finish line of this life lies an eternal future with Christ Himself. Today: why the new birth is a miracle only God can perform.

Most of us are somewhat out of shape, and for us to make a decent showing at a track meet, well, that would take a miracle. It takes another kind of miracle to set us on the road to heaven. All the effort we could ever expend won’t take us an inch in heaven’s direction. Jesus told us that what we need is the miracle of the new birth.

Athletes love to win, and if there’s one thing keeping them from winning, you can be sure they’ll do whatever it takes to deal with it. For those running the race of life, the goal line is heaven. Now if there’s one thing you have to have to get into heaven, you’ll want to know what it is. Today: you’ll find out just how desperately we all need the gift of righteousness.

We humans can live for weeks without food; perhaps days without water. But without air, we would die in a few minutes. In the race of the Christian life, there is one gift of God that believers cannot live without. We dare not die without it, either, since this gift opens the doors of heaven, making us acceptable in God’s sight. Want to know what this gift is?
