Finding God in Your Desert, Part 2 of 2

October 20, 2011
If life were a bed of roses, we would never appreciate how good roses smell. For Moses, the desert gave him that appreciation. Herding sheep was his lot for 40 years, a time during which God was preparing him for leadership beyond his wildest dreams. And many of us are now in the desert, learning lessons for a future day when we’ll understand why we needed to learn them.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When the economy falters, the real story is told in the lives of people losing jobs, homes, and ultimately, hope. For many, life is increasingly hard. There seems to be no way out of every day’s problems. The American Dream is just that, a fleeting dream. What do you do when life is hard and options are few? Today: the first of two messages about tough times, and how to handle them.

When a potter throws clay on his wheel, that clay has no choice about what it is going to become. It’s job is to be still and be transformed. Seeing ourselves as clay helps us avoid the “I’m in charge” attitude we all too often have. As the Potter, God is in charge, and He has a purpose we cannot see, a purpose that will take us through the fire so that, one day, we will come out as gold.

We humans tend to think we are hot stuff. We think we are in control, little realizing that Someone else sets the agenda. Many believers have never seen themselves as clay on a potter’s wheel, being molded to suit the Potter’s purposes. But the sooner we understand that, the sooner we will be fruitful members of the body of Christ. Today: lessons from a wheel and a furnace, during a trip to Israel.

As the tide of immorality rises, the damage done to marriages and families rises with it. One cause: Satan. Satan uses his demons to influence and indwell people, leaving behind a trail of destructive choices and actions. The victims of these actions are then left with pasts that are hard to deal with.

Philosophers have long wrestled with the root cause of evil in the human experience. Their answers are not satisfying. That is because we need to look outside ourselves, even outside our environments, to find one major cause of evil, and that cause is Satan, who seeks to destroy in any way he can.

It is said that hardened criminals and psychopaths have no shame. They can kill without showing a shred of remorse. Those who still have a conscience can feel shame, that sense of embarrassment when caught in a sinful act. Some shame is healthy, but there’s also the painful shame that victims of sexual abuse bear, often for life. Today: how to handle both kinds of shame.

Sexual abuse almost never happens in healthy families. But in a day of dysfunctional families, abuse is rampant. To understand why people become sexual abusers, we need to understand the “why” of dysfunctional families. Today: a look at an Old Testament family scandalized by abuse and the awful damage that resulted. Then, we will see how God can heal the deep scars left behind.

Abuse can take many forms. But when that abuse is sexual, and when the young are abused, it’s a double tragedy. Psychological scars are left that may never be healed. All too many people cry every night for the childhoods they never had. One common experience abuse victims share is grief, that gnawing sadness that’s always just below the surface.

Perhaps the greatest tool the devil uses to corrupt our culture is sexual abuse of the young. The damage done is terrible. Psychological damage is only the first kind. Relationships throughout life suffer due to early experiences children should never have had. Today: hope for all who struggle with sexual abuse, and also, hope for those doing the abusing.

We cannot now comprehend the transformation that awaits us at the resurrection. It will be a moment of pure glory. Not only do we receive glorified bodies, but all of creation is transformed into a cosmic chorus shouting “glory” to the God who redeemed us. Today: the transcendant finale to the symphony of God’s glory, which is the end of time, and the beginning of a radiant eternity.
