Finding God in a Tight Place, Part 1 of 2 (When Life is Hard)

April 15, 2014

Jonah finally obeyed God, but he took no joy in the revival following his preaching in Ninevah. His self-focus kept him from seeing the big picture. Instead, he sat down and asked God to end his life.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Some of God’s servants have to go to the school of hard knocks before they learn to obey God from the heart. Jonah finally went to Ninevah with a hard heart; he had no real concern for the people of this great pagan city.

God wants His servants focused on His agenda, not their own. It has taken extraordinary measures to get Jonah back on the road to Ninevah, but now he is going, in body if not in heart

Ever been at the end of your rope? Jonah was, when he found himself in the belly of a fish. God has amazing ways of getting us to say yes. He arranges conditions so that we will choose to do His will.

When God wants to get the attention of one of His servants, He has many creative options. In the case of Jonah, God took extreme measures. The belly of a great fish is hardly the Holiday Inn, and here Jonah got the message.
April 9, 2014
Jonah was determined to avoid doing a distasteful job, preaching to a pagan city, that they might repent. He would rather go the opposite direction than tell the Ninevites that judgment could be averted.

God has many ways of getting us to say yes, even when we are digging in our heels. We are about to study the life of the prophet Jonah. We will see that God has a multitude of creative ways to make sure we change our minds.

Behind every turn in Joseph’s life we see God’s hand. And God has a plan for you and for me; a dream He wants to see brought to pass. If your life seems haphazard, be encouraged that God is in control.
April 4, 2014
It was a long road from a pit in Canaan to a palace in Egypt. For Joseph, God’s dream had been fulfilled. The fate of men and nations depended on one man holding on to a dream God had given him, a component of the providence of God.
April 3, 2014
The story of Joseph in Egypt is very dramatic, a former slave judging the brothers who sold him into slavery years before. In the mind of God, an ingenious plan was unfolding to save two nations. A dream was indeed coming to pass.
April 2, 2014
Joseph’s dream was almost destroyed by frightful circumstances. But God saw to it that the dream’s fulfillment had international consequences. There was a far bigger purpose at work than Joseph even realized. And the same may be true for you.
