Finding Community in Service, Part 2 of 2 (Finding Community Within the Church)

June 17, 2016

The race of life is most productive when everyone fulfills his or her God-given role. Romans 12 lists the spiritual gifts God gives to make fulfilling that role a joy, not a burden. If you are a Christian, you have a gift, and it is designed to serve others.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The race of life is a lot easier when others run with you. The local church is where deep needs can best be met. Yes, there will be struggles, but the church is where we experience true community and family.

To make sure we understood Calvary, God gave us Mount Moriah. There Abraham, a picture of God the Father, was told to sacrifice Isaac, the picture of Christ the Son. To read Genesis 22 is to weep. Let’s plumb the depths of a story only God could have written.

There are few places in the Bible that draw more tears than the account found in Genesis 22. Abraham is told to sacrifice his son Isaac, the son of promise, the son through whose line the Redeemer was to come. By the command of God, Isaac was to die.

Sodom’s debauchery was relentless to the end. The brimstone was coming as God mercifully sent two angels to rescue Lot’s family before the destruction arrived. Lot’s story is a message of compromise, and his faith was too weak to stand against evil. In short, he had “A Worldly Faith.”

God had agreed to spare Sodom if ten righteous were found. Abraham had worked hard, thinking that he had struck a sure deal as he negotiated with the Lord. There had to be 10! But then the smoke rose in the distance. Was his prayer worth it? What is the real purpose of prayer?

One day, Abraham came out of his tent and saw three men standing there. But these men were not ordinary men! With keen spiritual insight, he sensed that he was in the presence of the Lord. As Hebrews 13 says, some “have entertained angels without knowing it.” Two were angels, but one of the men was the Lord Himself.

Genesis 21 tells of the parting between the two sons of Abraham. Ishmael was cast out of the house along with his mother Hagar. God’s clear intention, as carried out by Abraham, was for Isaac to carry on the line of the promise.

For 99 years he was known as Abram. But according to the purposes of God, he was then called Abraham, the “father of many nations.” How could this be? Ishmael is a teenager, and Isaac is not even born! Yet this was a crucial point in history.

Sarah’s idea for Abraham to father a promised heir through her maid backfired. Sarah grew jealous, and Hagar ran away to escape the torment. But God found her and comforted her in the midst of her troubles.

Sometimes, we try to engineer circumstances to bring God’s will to pass. Abraham did that when God promised him numberless offspring. Since his wife was too old, he slept with their Egyptian maid Hagar. The result was conflict and enmity.
