Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Families can be torn apart by feuds, long-running animosities usually caused by someone’s past unjust actions. Whether due to some real or imagined hurt, or to an inheritance wrongly divided, some feuds go on for generations. Conflict becomes a way of life. Unless the cycle is broken, hatred can consume us. It would be nice if all disputes could be resolved — all conflicts reconciled. In the real world that is not always possible. In some cases resolution is not an option; we are forced to cut all ties with those causing our conflict. But if resolution is possible, it must be pursued. Today we will discuss how Jacob and Esau finally faced one another after their long conflict.

Eliphaz told Job, “Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.” Trouble is what two brothers in the Bible had. Jacob and Esau are classic examples of how different siblings can be. Just as in any family, conflict is inevitable. Jacob, the younger brother, conspired to take the birthright of his older brother Esau — and the lifelong battle began. Today we will hear lessons from the family of Isaac.

We all recoil hearing stories of killers who slay without conscience or remorse. We are especially disturbed when these people complain if they are not treated properly. In their twisted minds they have a double standard. They are like Cain of old. Although he had no sorrow after killing Abel, he was quite worried that someone might kill him. Today we will seek to understand the mind of the self-absorbed.

Have you ever met a destroyer? A destroyer is someone who can inflict tremendous hurt without feeling any guilt. Sadly, destroyers are everywhere. Although they are tuned in to their own pain, they are incapable of caring whether their victims are in pain or not. Destroyers are nothing new. In fact, the first destroyer was born into mankind’s first family. Today we will learn what motivates destroyers.

Trying to predict all the effects of being offended is like trying to predict where all the waves will go when you toss a rock into a pond. When we react to an offense, collateral damage is very likely. Join us today for an eye-opening look into the unintended consequences of harboring an offense rather than seeking reconciliation.

It is instinctive to recoil from pain. But then there is inner pain. Some conflict in life is inevitable. But when others cause our conflicts, it is hard to escape that pain. Something inside each of us cries out for justice. Today we are beginning a series to help us deal with the wrongs that others inflict.

Although the church celebrates the resurrection of Jesus every year, in one sense it celebrates that great event every week. On the first day of the week His disciples found their crucified Lord very much alive. Every Sunday since, God’s people have gathered to mark the raising of Jesus from the dead. He is indeed the Victor over the grave. Since we are His followers, we too shall have victory.

Many people have said things about Jesus, adding their biases to the biblical account of His life. But the most attested fact of ancient history is the bodily resurrection of Jesus. It is that resurrection which gives us the promise of our own resurrection. God raised Him in power, and He will raise all who believed in His Son.

On the Mount of Olives outside Jerusalem is a church called Dominus Flevit, which means “the tears of God.” Near this spot, Jesus wept over a city which was soon to be destroyed. God would use the Romans to level the temple in judgment since the nation of Israel did not acknowledge the day of their visitation by the Son of God. In 70 AD, not one stone of the temple was left upon another.
