Dodging Spears #1 of 2

"Someone's out to get me." That's what David must have thought as Israel's King Saul tried to kill him for ten long years. Many people face perennial attack by those who want to do them harm. What drives these "spear throwers?" And how do we as believers handle long-running attacks from others? Today: a biblical approach on what to do when reconciliation is not possible.

Sometimes family feuds run for centuries. Generation after generation nurses the old grudges that keep people apart. But the cycle can be broken. Forgiving others for great wrongs dissolves years of hatred in mere moments. That's what happened when Joseph forgave his jealous brothers for selling him as a slave. Today: one of the most unforgettable episodes in all of the Bible.

Families can be torn apart by feuds: long-running animosities usually caused by someone's past unjust actions. Whether due to some imagined or real hurt, or, to an inheritance wrongly divided, some feuds go on for generations. Conflict becomes a way of life. Unless the cycle is broken, hatred can consume blood relatives. Is there a way out?

It would be nice if all disputes could be resolved, all conflicts reconciled. In the real world that's not always possible. In some cases resolution is not an option...we have to cut all ties with those causing our conflict. But if resolution is possible, it should be pursued. Today: how Jacob and Esau finally faced one another after their long conflict.

Eliphaz told Job, "Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward." And trouble is what two brothers had. Jacob and Esau are classic examples of how different two children can be. Like in any family, conflict was almost inevitable. Jacob the younger connived the birthright of Esau the elder, and the lifelong battle began.

We all recoil hearing stories of killers who slay without conscience or remorse and then complain if they're not treated properly. In their twisted minds, these people have a real double standard. They're like Cain of old, who had no sorrow for killing Abel, but was quite worried that someone might kill him. Today: understanding the mind of the self-absorbed.

Ever met a destroyer...someone who can inflict tremendous hurt without feeling any guilt? Sadly, destroyers are everywhere. They're really tuned in to their own pain, but are incapable of caring whether their victims are in pain or not. Destroyers are nothing new...in fact, the first destroyer was born into mankind's first family. Today: we'll learn what motivates destroyers.

Trying to predict all the effects of being offended is like predicting where all the waves will go when you toss a rock into a pond. When we react to an offense, some collateral damage is very likely. Today: join us for an eye-opening look into the unintended consequences of harboring an offense rather than seeking reconciliation.

It's instinctive to recoil from pain. Just watch what happens when you stick a friend with a pin. But then there's inner pain. Some conflict in life is inevitable, but when others cause our conflicts, it's hard to escape that pain. Something inside each of us cries out for justice. Today, we're beginning a series to help us deal with the wrongs that others inflict.

No one likes lukewarm food or drink. Hot or cold is much better. Jesus said as much when evaluating a local church. He had strong words for the lukewarm Laodicean church in Revelation chapter three. But his tough love included a gracious offer for a way for them to regain their lost fervor. His rebuke and chastening would lead to renewal and power...for them, and for us.

Some Bible scholars see a progression as Jesus evaluates seven successive churches in the book of Revelation. They see the passing of history, with each church representing an era of time. If so, we may be in the last era, part of a church Jesus says he will spew out of his mouth. Is your church spiritually hot, or, like the one at Laodicea, merely lukewarm?
