Developing a Support System, Part 2 of 2

September 28, 2012
When times are good, it’s not hard to go it alone. But when calamity strikes, you need a support system around you. The prophet Jeremiah compares this to being like a tree next to a stream, drawing nourishment so it can survive the drought. Believers facing a tough future need each other more than ever. This means connecting with fellow believers so that we all can bear fruit.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. There comes a time in the decline of a nation when God will no longer delay judgment — then things get really bad. America may be at that point. Economic and social calamity will strike everyone, including believers. How should believers act and live when the really hard times come? This message contains guidance from an Old Testament prophet who saw times like ours coming.

The great tribulation can be traced to the rage of Satan, who wants one last chance to wreak havoc before facing doom — one last chance to shake his fist at God and His people — one last chance to get people to worship him instead of God. And of course, one last chance to destroy the faith of those still alive who believe in Jesus. Today we will learn how to overcome our mortal enemy the devil.

In Revelation 13, the future antichrist’s power is on display, and he’s slaughtering Christians. The antichrist is known as the beast. He forces the whole world to worship him using military and economic pressure. Without his mark, no one can buy or sell. Could any of us maintain our faith in Jesus during a time like this — when the choice is to worship the beast or die?

In ancient Rome, Christians were persecuted and killed by the thousands. If you think those days are over, think again. According to an article in the February 13, 2012 edition of Newsweek, Christians are being murdered for their faith from one end of the Muslim world to the other — and the mainstream media remains quiet. There is a war on to destroy the faith of believers in Christ, and this war is coming to our own shores. Today we ask ourselves what it would take for us to deny our faith.

Many people stash away cash in case the day of calamity comes. But what if your money is of no value on that day? To trust in riches is to trust in a vapor that passes away. James talks a great deal about economic justice for the poor, telling us that one day, our gold and silver will not buy anything. This message contains some stark lessons for a future that may be just around the corner.

Many people watch the stock market like a hawk. Some get nervous when the price of gold drops. We all need money. But one day the money we crave will be no more. One day, all that gives us security will vanish, and that is the day of final judgment. Then, what we are on the inside will be all that matters.

Sometimes, we are tempted to take the easy way out of a trial, even though we know that the easy way is not God’s way. Jesus, hungry and thirsty, was offered all the kingdoms of the world if only He would worship Satan. We too sometimes see a quick solution to our crisis, and are tempted to dishonor God to meet legitimate needs.

Sometimes we find ourselves going directly from great blessing to times of great trial. That’s what happened to Jesus. He was led by God into the wilderness and found Himself tempted to sin by the devil. Hungry and thirsty, He was very vulnerable — but He fought off Satan by using the Word of God.

Advertisers say that having more is what life is all about. We need more money, a bigger house, and nicer vacations. But having less can be a greater blessing. Having less means reaching out to those around you because you have to. Family and community mean much more when tough times come. As you face your tough times, take some lessons from the life of a woman in the Old Testament.

It’s been said that if all the tears people ever cried could be gathered up, they’d fill an ocean. Sorrow comes to all of us. Life does have joys, but some think that’s all it should have. God allows tears as well, because through tears we learn to depend on God for every breath, every bite of food, and every dollar in our wallets.
