Come and See His Temptation #2 of 2

February 23, 2010
"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," people say. Many of us seek immediate gain rather than long-term benefit. Some of us want our comforts and happiness more than we want to do the will of God. By denying Himself for forty days in the wilderness, Jesus showed us that there is a higher purpose in life than feeling good and getting what we want.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When you travel east from Jerusalem you find yourself in a barren wilderness. Rocks are everywhere water is scarce. It was here that Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan. Weakened by hunger and thirst, the Son of God faced His enemy, and taught us how to face that same enemy. In this message we will trace the story of forty tough days in the life of Christ.

When Jesus sought out John to be baptized in the river Jordan, He was creating a picture for all who would follow Him. That picture was one that predicted His coming atoning death and God's power in bringing Him back from the grave. Baptism is a public display of our belief in a life after death. Here are a few lessons we can take home from the baptism of Christ.

Without political power or military assets, Jesus altered the direction of history, pleasing God by living a perfect life. God's approval was clear when a voice thundered from heaven, "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." This took place on the occasion of Jesus' baptism in the river Jordan. In this message we take a look at that baptism, and what it means.

"For without faith it is impossible to please God." This Bible verse is the key to seeing victory when all seems lost. Living in triumph means knowing that nothing can separate you from the love of God, not even death or the death of someone close to you. Only the Christian can face the worst life has to offer and know it is but a steppingstone to a glory that will never end.

The words the Apostle Paul used to conclude Romans chapter eight are among the most soaring words ever penned. Here he lists all the things that cannot separate us from the love of God. If you're a believer who's treading some deep water right now, and you need some encouragement, you've come to the right place.

As a monk, Martin Luther would go to confession for hours at a time, trying to be sure his every sin would be forgiven. Did this guarantee him a place in heaven? No, it did not. Certainty only came when he discovered the principle of justification by faith. Confessing sins is fine, but that next sin lies in wait around the corner.

A death-row inmate faces a grim prospect. His date with execution will soon arrive. He's got nowhere to turn. But sometimes, a governor will commute the sentence, or set him free if new evidence is discovered. In a moment, the inmate's outlook leaps from despair to joy. We all deserve a spiritual death-row sentence.

In the movie "National Treasure," explorers find a vast horde of gold and jewels after tracking clues to its whereabouts. When Christians explore the Bible, they find a vast horde of blessings that they will inherit as children of God. Our outlook on life becomes an uplook when we realize what lies ahead.

How would you react if a lawyer called, saying you'd just inherited a million dollars from a distant relative? Disbelief? Sure, but later, reality would sink in when the check was placed in your shaking hands. Well, if you're a believer, you have a check waiting for you at the bank of heaven. And it's for far more than a mere million.

Those who believe in Jesus and have found new life all share a common reality; they were chosen by God in eternity past. Before they were born, God knew they would share in His eternal kingdom. This would involve forgiving their sins and declaring them to be as righteous as His Son. If life now seems uncertain, know this: your future is as secure as the God who will make sure you get there.
