Christ the Servant #2 of 2

December 23, 2009
At Christmas, we share the joys of gift-giving and togetherness with family, "making merry," all because of Jesus. Jesus came in poverty that we might be rich. In fact, according to the prophecies of Isaiah, He came as a servant. Today: we continue our look at Christ the servant, the one whose life, death and resurrection make Christmas possible. Stay with us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. In general, kings do not perform the role of servants. They have a retinue of people whose sole job it is to serve the king's needs.... Jesus will return one day as King of Kings. But in His first coming He was a servant to the will of God, giving His life to save His people from their sins. Today: we begin a look into three chapters of Isaiah, chapters that reveal what kind of servant Jesus was.

Many people find Christmas discouraging. Perhaps they have no one to celebrate with...no one to give them a gift.... Let's let Isaiah the prophet lift our spirits by reminding us of the future reign of Christ the King on this earth. Indeed, the baby Jesus will be a baby no longer when his thousand-year reign of peace dispels the darkness of war and suffering.

Americans have little use for kings. Kings have absolute rule....that's why we declared independence in 1776. Kings have a total claim on people's lives, time, and taxes. We're not used to that these days...we see kings as relics of a bygone era. But today: we'll see why Christ is the long foretold King of Kings, and what that title means.

When light hits a diamond, the facets reflect brilliantly. We see flashes of color in the radiance of the pure white core.... Like a diamond, the purity of Jesus radiates in many facets as we behold His glory. Isaiah gave us names to describe these characteristics in the ninth chapter of his prophecy. Today: a look at the names ascribed to Christ, and what they mean.

Merchants: they're into gift-giving, and they all love Christmas. They depend on it for a huge portion of their annual sales. At the mall we're assailed by lights, trees, tinsel, ornaments, and all sorts of holiday cheer. What you won't find there is much reference to the Christ whose coming is the reason for the season. Today: we're set to rectify that imbalance.

Some Bible promises were for certain people, while others apply to all believers. Keeping this straight solves many problems.... Just because Joshua prayed for the sun to stand still doesn't mean we can. It just isn't true that "every promise in the book is mine." But there are powerful Bible promises we can, and should, stake our lives on.

Many of us pray for little things, where there isn't much risk. Then there's Joshua, who prayed for big things...I mean really big things... He needed more daylight to defeat an enemy, so he asked God to make the sun stand still. Now that's faith. Today: lessons we can learn from an event that seems to defy the rules of nature. Stay with us, as we pay a visit to the Valley of Ajilon.

God in His grace has a way of turning our lemons into lemonade. He can make good come even out of bad decisions.... Joshua cut a bad deal with the Gibeonites, but God used it for the long-term benefit of His people. And guess what....He can use your bad calls to work out His ultimate purposes. Today: insights on what can come from your bad decisions.

It happens to all of us. Despite our best intentions, we make poor decisions, and then have to live with the consequences. Part of running life's race is dealing with those bad decisions. Are you stuck with the after-effects of a bad move you've made? Joshua made a poor call during his conquest of Canaan, and how he dealt with it can help us deal with our bad choices.

It's sad, but it's true. Many believers attempt to manage their sins rather than to confess and forsake them. They think they can control their lives and keep a lid on the infection eating them up inside. They keep their sins a secret, feeling sure they can contain the damage. But the story of Joshua and Achan proves otherwise. Today: some sober conclusions we must understand.
