Running To Win

Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

Christ the Lord of Our Talents, Part 2 of 2

January 30, 2012
Not all of us can win the hundred-meter dash. But all of us can run to the best of our ability. That is all a coach can expect. For every track star in the Olympics, there are ten thousand runners who will never make the team. But that is no reason to give up. Many believers with few talents approach life with a clenched fist rather than an open hand.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. We are not all made the same. Some are more talented than others. But all believers run life’s race toward a heavenly goal. We have all been given gifts and abilities. But it is how we use them, not how many we have got, that determines the outcome of our personal race. Rather than jealously complaining about what we do not have, let us focus today on how to best use the gifts we do have.

At the racetrack, coaches watch their athletes, stopwatches in hand. Because for a runner, time is how victory is measured. The same is true for Christians in life’s race. How we use our time determines our effectiveness for God. At the end of this life, we will be judged for our deeds, deeds that took place as the clock ticked off the minutes, days, and years.

In a race, no time can be wasted. Runners pace themselves, knowing that winners only win by a fraction of a second. For Christians running life’s race, the clock is also relentless. Once gone, time cannot be reclaimed. The Bible teaches believers to “redeem the time, for the days are evil.” Time must be used wisely, because for each of us, one day time will be no more.

There is a rising tide of addictions in our land as substance abuse and sexual obsessions destroy people every day. Today join us for a face-to face chat with Erwin Lutzer on how to break the power of modern-day addictions, and how to experience the power of forgiveness. These are both key objectives in the task of putting you past behind you.

It is disorienting to lose your way when running a race. Just so, life itself is disoriented when we go astray from God. The key principle? Get back on track where you got off. There is no way to short-circuit the process. We must deal with the issues that took us into darkness before we can again run freely in the light. If you are trapped by guilt, today’s broadcast may help you do just that.

In a cross-country race, it is possible to get lost...to lose track of where you should be. You need help to find your way back. And, people who have lost some time in life due to the grip of the past need to find their way back as well. Often they are burdened with guilt, guilt from realizing that they made choices that took them into darkness. Today we will learn to deal with the sin in our lives, and then regain our focus on the race ahead.

Power; that is what a lot of tired runners wish they had more of as they round the final turn on the Olympic racetrack. Believers need power as well: God’s power to overcome the past and look forward to the future. And prayer is the key to channeling that power, power to fight a very real enemy. Today we will learn about warfare praying and channeling God’s power to the destruction of Satan’s strongholds.

As we believers run the race of life, we get weary. Energy runs low, it does not seem like we will make it for another lap. That is when we need a source of power for fresh strength. The Bible says those who hope in the Lord “shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Are you weary in your race of life? How to tap into that resource of hope is our focus on today’s broadcast.

You can never win in the race of life with a fearful heart. Every day, each of us needs fresh courage to face what is ahead. Satan whispers lies in our hearts to immobilize us, to stop us in our tracks. But if we see ourselves from heaven’s perspective, everything changes. We need not succumb to Satan’s bondage, for Christ has set us free.

Life is a race toward a goal. For the Christian, that goal is pleasing God, and enjoying His eternity. Toward that, we run, but Satan the destroyer wants to impede our races in every way. His strategy is to implant evil thoughts, make them into obsessions, and then turn them into strongholds. Today we will learn about the forces conspiring to ruin both our pasts and our futures. And we will point the way to true freedom.
