How glad we are that God gives us richly all things to enjoy. And in sending His Son to Earth, He gave us four great gifts we should remember when we think of the birth of Jesus. For believers in the race of life, the ultimate goal is still ahead. When Christ returns, all our labors will end. The hope of Christ’s return has motivated Christians for two thousand years. And that return in power is nearer now than ever. Only a few saw Jesus rise into heaven, but every eye will see Him return to vanquish His enemies.

There’s a day coming for believers in which the race of this life will end. No more running, no more track, no more labor. That day is the bright hope for Christians — the day Jesus returns. That day will be like no other before or since. And because the Scripture cannot be broken, that promised day is an absolute certainty.

Believers who run the race of the Christian life do not run alone. Christ ascended to bring many sons and daughters to glory. His ascension was “step one” in creating the church, the body of Christ, here on Earth to bear witness to Him until His return. Only a few saw Jesus rise into the sky, but everyone will see Him when He returns.

He came as a babe in poverty. He left Earth in triumphant glory and His departure foretells the power of His return. We who run the race of the Christian life know that Jesus is sitting at God’s right hand and His ascension into heaven opened its gates for us. Why is the ascension important? Surprisingly, it was the key to founding the church — the body of Christ.

We all know the Olympic games began in ancient Greece. We know that they involved runners and races. But how do we know that? Because historical writings tell us so. The same is true of Jesus and His resurrection, there is historical written evidence that says He rose from the dead. Though naysayers may come and go, Christ’s resurrection is as certain as any event in history.

If there is one thing ancient Rome was good at, it was executions. They had a perfect record, no one they killed ever lived again, that is, until Jesus made the comeback of all time. When God raised Him from the dead, Christ was triumphant over death itself. And His resurrection guarantees that those who believe in Him, though long dead, will one day rise as well.

When winning Olympians take home their gold medals, they don’t hide them. They put them on display for the nation to see. The love of God was put on display when Jesus willingly went to the cross to die for our sins. His sacrifice was visible that day in Jerusalem, and, through the eye of faith, it is visible — even now — to those who trust Him for the salvation His death purchased.

For athletes, the greatest moments of life are defined by victories in the arena, on the playing field, or on the racetrack. But Christ’s defining moment was a cruel death on the cross. For those who believe, that death bought forgiveness of sins. And for that, we must be eternally grateful. Today we will begin to explore the horrific price paid for our salvation.
