Channeling God's Power, Part 2 of 2

January 19, 2012
Power; that is what a lot of tired runners wish they had more of as they round the final turn on the Olympic racetrack. Believers need power as well: God’s power to overcome the past and look forward to the future. And prayer is the key to channeling that power, power to fight a very real enemy. Today we will learn about warfare praying and channeling God’s power to the destruction of Satan’s strongholds.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As we believers run the race of life, we get weary. Energy runs low, it does not seem like we will make it for another lap. That is when we need a source of power for fresh strength. The Bible says those who hope in the Lord “shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Are you weary in your race of life? How to tap into that resource of hope is our focus on today’s broadcast.

You can never win in the race of life with a fearful heart. Every day, each of us needs fresh courage to face what is ahead. Satan whispers lies in our hearts to immobilize us, to stop us in our tracks. But if we see ourselves from heaven’s perspective, everything changes. We need not succumb to Satan’s bondage, for Christ has set us free.

Life is a race toward a goal. For the Christian, that goal is pleasing God, and enjoying His eternity. Toward that, we run, but Satan the destroyer wants to impede our races in every way. His strategy is to implant evil thoughts, make them into obsessions, and then turn them into strongholds. Today we will learn about the forces conspiring to ruin both our pasts and our futures. And we will point the way to true freedom.

Some of us run life’s race. Others jog, some walk. But those who have been abused can hardly put one foot in front of the other. Memories of abuse have imprisoned millions in jails of guilt and shame. Some falsely wonder if they deserved the abuse they received. Abusers are trapped with consciences so guilt-ridden they cannot look anyone in the eye. How glad we are to proclaim that there is a way out.

Abuse: verbal, physical, sexual. It leaves wounds that must be healed before anyone can run life’s race freely. Both abusers and the abused live with haunting memories. These memories can cripple a child’s emotional future, and they can drive permanent wedges between the closest of relatives. Today on Running to Win, we will begin to learn how to be free from the grip of an abused past.

After the race’s final turn, a runner far back in the pack loses hope. There is no way he can ever break the tape. People who have addictions feel the same way, hopeless, until they come face to face with the Christ who can make them clean and free. Apart from that divine encounter there really is little hope for any addict to break free from the chains that bind him or her in repeated destructive behavior.

Addiction: being a slave to a substance, habit, or lifestyle. No one can win in life’s race while addicted to anything. Many addicts say they can stop anytime they want to. Trouble is: few ever want to. So what is the key to breaking addictions, which, if left to run their course, will certainly end in tragedy or even death? We need to understand addiction, and learn how its vicious hold can be broken.

Some athletes use drugs to get that competitive edge. But short-term gain is followed by long-term ruin. So it is in the battle for our minds. Psychiatric solutions cannot always deal with the root issues if it is really a spiritual war. The enemy will not just “go away;” we need to take proactive steps to defend our thinking from Satan’s delusions, using God’s weapons in the war for our souls.

There is a war on, but it is not being fought with guns. The stakes are high, and like it or not, everyone is on the front lines. It is the battle for your mind, as forces conspire to slow you down in life’s race through confusion and false teaching. Those forces are in control of much of the media we see and hear, and the enemy of our souls wants nothing less than to control what you think about.

So, friend, what is your besetting sin? Many Christians are weighed down with sins they cannot seem to stop committing. And so they run life’s race with difficulty, getting farther behind all the time. The goal line is obscured, and for some, is almost lost from sight. Some feel their sin qualifies as “unpardonable.” Stay tuned, and you will learn that you can still run your race in the freedom of forgiveness.
